We landed A beautiful 9ft Lemon Shark!!!!! Zack & his team set us up for some great pictures as we all helped to release the giant back to sea. The night ended with 1 more great fight as we pulled A giant black tip weighing over 120 lbs easily. They taught my youngest son how to fillet A shark and sent us home with more meat than we ever expected!!!! They're most active during the warmer months when baitfish are thick along the coast, and their distinctive head shape makes them easy to identify even in the dark. What makes them special is their fighting style – they're known for long, powerful runs that'll test your endurance and the drag system on those big reels. Anglers love the smooth hammerhead because they're aggressive feeders and put up a fight that's all business from the moment they feel the hook.
Shortfin Mako Sharks are the speed demons of the shark world, capable of hitting speeds over 40 mph and launching themselves completely out of the water when hooked. These torpedo-shaped predators usually show up in the 6 to 8-foot range around Destin, though bigger ones aren't uncommon. Carcharhinus LimbatusBlacktips are exciting sharks to target, especially since they love to jump and can get pretty acrobatic when hooked. They average around 5 feet but the big ones can reach over 9 feet, making them perfect for our monster shark trips. You'll find them patrolling artificial reefs and muddy bottom areas, usually in 30-100 feet of water. They feed heavily on mackerel, herring, and croaker, so they respond well to oily chum and cut bait. What's cool about blacktips is their social nature - they'll come in groups and can get worked up into feeding frenzies. Despite being aggressive feeders, they can be a bit timid around boats until the feeding switch flips. Summer months are prime time when they're most active in our waters. My go-to technique is using live or cut mackerel on circle hooks with a good chum slick. Once you get them going, expect multiple hookups and some serious jumping action.
Isurus OxyrinchusShortfin makos are pure speed and power - the fastest sharks in the ocean, hitting 30+ mph and known to leap 20 feet out of the water. These guys average around 13 feet but the big females can push well over that. They're found throughout the Gulf, preferring open water near the surface but will dive deep when hunting. Makos are aggressive predators that'll eat just about anything - tuna, billfish, even other sharks. What makes them special for anglers is the fight - they're smart, strong, and will use every trick including jumping into boats to get free. The meat is also some of the best eating of any shark. During our summer season, they're actively feeding in the warmer waters. Here's the key: when you hook one, keep constant pressure and be ready for aerial shows. Use heavy wire leaders and circle hooks because they'll test every connection you've got. These fish have serious attitude and the power to back it up.
Sphyrna ZygaenaThe smooth hammerhead is the second-largest hammerhead species, averaging around 11 feet but can push past that mark easily. What sets them apart is their curved, wide head without the scalloped edges you see on other hammerheads. These sharks are active hunters, feeding on rays, bony fish, and even other sharks. They prefer our warmer Gulf waters during summer months, typically cruising in depths less than 66 feet, though they'll go deeper when chasing food. Unlike their great hammerhead cousins, smooth hammerheads are more common and aggressive feeders, making them solid targets during our peak season. They school up during migrations, so when you find one, there's usually more around. Pro tip: when targeting these guys, use plenty of chum with oily fish like mackerel - their electroreceptors will pick up the scent trail from way out and draw them right to your bait.
Alopias VulpinusThresher sharks are probably the most unique-looking sharks you'll encounter, with that signature tail that's as long as their body. They average around 16 feet and 500+ pounds, using that massive tail like a whip to stun schools of baitfish at speeds up to 50 mph. These are open ocean hunters, typically found 40-50 miles offshore in 100-2000 feet of water where the continental shelf drops off. They're highly migratory and show up in our Gulf waters during warmer months. What makes them special is watching them work - they'll launch completely out of the water and put on aerial displays that'll blow your mind. The fight is different from other sharks too, more acrobatic and unpredictable. Despite their size, they have small mouths, so use smaller hooks than you'd expect. Key is finding bait balls where they're actively hunting. Drift with live mackerel or sardines and wait for the magic to happen.
Galeocerdo CuvierTigers are the apex predators everyone wants to catch - massive, powerful, and built like tanks. These guys commonly run 11-14 feet and 800-1400 pounds, with the big females pushing 16+ feet and over a ton. They're named for those distinctive dark stripes that fade as they age. What makes tigers special is they'll eat absolutely anything and fight like nothing else in the water. They prefer deeper water but move shallow to hunt, using their incredible sense of smell and electroreceptors to find food. Our Gulf waters see them thick during summer months when the water warms up. They're generally slow cruisers but can explode with power when they attack. The fight is what draws anglers - pure brute strength that'll test every piece of your gear. Best technique is heavy cut bait like tuna or mackerel on big circle hooks with wire leaders. When you hook one, settle in for a marathon battle. These fish don't give up easy and have the muscle to prove it.
