Rachycentron CanadumCobia are the sharks that aren't sharks - their brown color and single dorsal fin fool everyone at first glance. These bruisers average 30-50 pounds and can top 100, making them one of our strongest fighters. Look for them around buoys, wrecks, and oil rigs in 30-100 feet during spring migration (April-June). They're usually solo fish cruising near the surface, which makes for exciting sight fishing. Guests love the hunt - spotting these giants and making the perfect cast. The fight is legendary with long runs and bulldogging power. Plus, cobia are top-shelf eating with firm, almost steak-like meat. My go-to technique is bucktail jigs in the 4-8 ounce range. Lutjanus GriseusGrey Snapper, also called Mangrove Snapper, are smart fish that'll test your patience. They average 1-2 pounds inshore but can hit 4-5 pounds around our offshore structure. Look for them around wrecks, reefs, and ledges in 30-80 feet of water. These copper-red fish with the dark eye stripe are night feeders, so dawn and dusk fishing works best. The payoff is some of the best eating fish in the Gulf with firm, white meat. My tip: use live shrimp on a light leader and let it sit motionless on bottom. Spring through fall offers the best action, especially during moving tides.
