Ocean City Maryland 4-Hour Fishing Charter
Looking for a solid half-day fishing trip that gets you on the fish without burning your whole day? Our 4-hour charter out of Ocean City is exactly what you're after. We hit the water at 7:00 AM when the fish are most active, targeting the productive nearshore and inshore waters where the wrecks hold some serious action. Whether you're brand new to fishing or just want to get your kids hooked on the sport, Captain JD and the crew know how to put you on fish while keeping things fun and relaxed. With just 4 anglers max, you'll get plenty of personal attention and coaching throughout the trip.
What to Expect on the Water
We'll cruise out to our proven spots around the nearshore wrecks and structure where fish stack up looking for an easy meal. These underwater obstacles create perfect ambush points for everything from flounder laying in the sand to black sea bass holding tight to the wreckage. The morning bite is usually the strongest, so that early start time isn't just for show – it's when you'll see the most rod-bending action. Our trips focus on bottom fishing techniques that are perfect for beginners but still exciting for seasoned anglers. You'll be working the structure, feeling for bites, and learning to read the bottom while we move between productive spots. The boat stays comfortable even in light chop, and we'll adjust our fishing style based on conditions to make sure everyone has a great time.
Gear and Fishing Techniques
We've got you covered with quality rods and reels spooled with the right line for the target species. Most of our fishing involves bottom rigs with circle hooks and fresh bait – think squid strips, clams, and cut bait that these fish can't resist. You'll learn proper hook-setting technique with circle hooks, which makes catch and release much easier on the fish. We use enough weight to stay in contact with the bottom in the current, and I'll show you how to feel the difference between a fish bite and just dragging bottom. When we're working the wrecks, precise boat positioning is key – we'll drift over structure or hold position with the trolling motor depending on conditions. All terminal tackle and bait is included, so you just need to bring yourself and maybe a cooler for any keepers you want to take home.
Customer Stories
"My husband, my daughter and I (all beginner fisherman and fisherwomen) had a wonderful fishing time on the board of Reel Steel. Captain JD and Mary were helpful, very kind and fun guides. We got the necessary information ahead, and the whole trip was well organized. We definitely received good starting instructions and came home with the files of 4 nice sized sheep fish that we caught in the Bay. Can't wait to taste the dish we will prepare from them tonight!" - Beatrix
"Hi Captain JD, There was no major issue with the boat for us at all (I wish I could select 4.9 for the boat). We felt your boat was very comfortable and safe. The only thing that I thought would make the boat even better is a little shade. I did not felt our 3 hrs trip uncomfortable, but if it was longer -or the day was hotter- I could appreciate a small cool down area on such beautiful sunny day. Thanks again for the great fishing experience!" - Beatrix
Species You'll Want to Hook
Grey Triggerfish are some of the most fun fish you'll encounter on our trips. These guys have serious attitude and will test your drag system with powerful runs back toward the structure. They're most active from late spring through fall, with the best action typically from June through September when water temperatures are in their sweet spot. Triggers have incredibly sharp teeth and strong jaws designed for crushing shellfish, so they'll make quick work of crabs and cut bait. What makes them exciting is their unpredictable fighting style – they'll make strong runs, then suddenly change direction or dive straight down. Most of our keeper triggers run 12-16 inches, and they make excellent table fare with firm, white meat that's perfect for fish tacos or grilled whole.
Tautog, or "tog" as we call them locally, are the bulldogs of the wreck fishing world. These chunky, powerful fish live right in the structure and will test both your tackle and your patience. Peak tog season runs from April through May and again from October through December when they're feeding heavily before and after spawning. They're notorious bait stealers with small mouths relative to their body size, so you'll need to pay close attention to subtle bites. Once hooked, they immediately head for the nearest piece of wreckage to cut your line, making the first few seconds of the fight critical. A good keeper tog runs 15-18 inches and provides some of the sweetest, most delicate fish meat you'll ever taste – definitely worth the challenge of catching them.
Black Sea Bass are the reliable workhorses of our nearshore fishing, providing steady action throughout the warmer months from May through October. These fish are structure-oriented and will hold tight to wrecks, reefs, and rocky bottom in depths from 30-100 feet. What anglers love about sea bass is their willingness to bite and their scrappy fight relative to their size. They're curious fish that will often investigate baits for a few seconds before committing, giving you time to feel them picking at your offering. Most of our sea bass run 12-16 inches, with the occasional 3-4 pounder that will surprise you with its strength. They're also fantastic eating with flaky white meat that's perfect for fish and chips or blackened on the grill. The regulations can change seasonally, so we'll make sure you know the current size and bag limits before we head out.
