They're not the hardest fighters, but they're fun to catch and there's usually plenty of action when you get into them. The bonus with sea bass is they're excellent table fare, and you can typically expect steady action throughout the day when they're cooperating.

They're aggressive feeders with sharp teeth that can crush sea urchins and crabs, making them fun to target year-round, though late spring through fall gives you the best action. Here's a local trick: when you feel that first nibble, don't set the hook right away. Triggerfish are notorious bait stealers, so let them take it and run a bit before you stick them. Tautoga OnitisAlso called blackfish, these stocky bruisers are the bullies of the rocky bottom. Most tautog run 1-3 pounds, but the big ones can hit 10+ pounds and live 30+ years around the same structures. Best fishing happens spring through fall when they're active during daylight hours - they literally sleep on their sides at night. What draws anglers back is the challenge and the payoff.
