Great barracuda are the opportunists of the bunch, showing up wherever there's bait and action. Pensacola's cuda run 10 to 30 pounds typically, with their silver sides flashing as they cruise the flats and nearshore waters. They're fast, aggressive, and spectacular jumpers when hooked. Barracuda will hit both live and artificial baits, and they're always a welcome surprise when you're targeting other species.
Red snapper are the prize fish when they're in season, typically summer months. These bottom dwellers live on the offshore structure and reefs in 60-150 feet of water. A good Gulf red snapper runs 5-15 pounds, with excellent table fare that's hard to beat. They're structure-oriented fish, so we fish them with heavy tackle and circle hooks, dropping baits right to the bottom around the artificial reefs and natural ledges.

They're year-round residents, but spring and fall bring the most consistent action. What guests love is that initial power run when you hook one - they'll test every knot and drag setting you've got. They hang around hard bottom, artificial reefs, and any structure they can find. What makes snapper fishing special is the anticipation - you never know if that bite is a keeper or a monster. The meat is absolutely top-notch, sweet and flaky. They can be line-shy, so use the lightest leader you can get away with and fresh bait like squid or pinfish.
Sciaenops OcellatusRedfish are the bread and butter of our inshore fishing here in Pensacola. These copper-colored bruisers average 20-30 inches and love the shallow flats, oyster bars, and grass beds in 1-4 feet of water. You'll spot them tailing in the shallows or cruising the edges of deeper holes. Fall and spring offer prime fishing when they school up, but summer sight-fishing in skinny water is hard to beat. Reds fight hard with that bulldogging power, and they're excellent table fare with sweet, flaky meat. They're not picky eaters - shrimp, crabs, and cut bait all work. My go-to trick: look for nervous baitfish and birds working an area. That's usually where the reds are feeding.
