Captain Robert Lee and his crew know these waters like the back of their hand, and they'll put you on fish whether you're a weekend warrior or someone who's never held a rod. The boat's got all the space you need, quality tackle that won't let you down, and a crew that actually wants to see you succeed. What to Expect on the Water
Your day starts early at the Destin harbor, where you'll meet the crew and get the rundown on what we're after. The Gulf of Mexico off Destin is home to some of the most diverse fishing in the Southeast, and we'll be hitting both natural reefs and artificial structures that hold different species throughout the day. The boat's equipped with everything you need - rods, reels, tackle, bait, and ice for your catch. We've got a solid fish box and cooler system, plus plenty of deck space so you're not bumping elbows when multiple people are hooked up. The crew handles all the technical stuff like finding the spots, rigging baits, and gaffing fish, so you can focus on the fun part. Don't worry about experience level - they'll coach beginners through their first bottom fish and help seasoned anglers dial in their technique for bigger targets.
Bottom Fishing & Trolling
Most of your day will be spent bottom fishing over structure, which is where the money fish live in the Gulf. We're talking about dropping heavy sinkers and chunky baits down 60 to 120 feet to where Grouper, Snapper, and Triggerfish hang out around ledges, wrecks, and rock piles. The crew rigs everything with circle hooks and quality terminal tackle that can handle the structure and the fish. When something big grabs your bait down there, you'll know it - Gulf bottom fish don't mess around. Between bottom fishing spots, we'll often troll for Mackerel and other pelagic species, covering water with diving plugs or live bait. Trolling breaks up the day and gives you a shot at some of the fastest fish in the Gulf. The crew reads the conditions and adjusts tactics based on what's biting, so no two trips are exactly the same.
Customer Stories
"We had an absolutely wonderful day on the water with Have Fun Charters! Our family of six (including four boys ages 5–11) couldn't have asked for a smoother or more enjoyable experience. Robert Lee and Brooke were exceptional — incredibly friendly, patient, and accommodating with our kids the entire day. The boat offered plenty of storage space, a great cooler, and plenty of room to move around comfortably. They knew exactly where to go to find the fish we were targeting and made sure we had a successful trip. We also got to see lots of amazing marine life along the way! Highly recommend Have Fun Charters for families looking for a fun, stress-free charter experience. We'll definitely be back!" - Lindsay
Species You'll Want to Hook
Red Snapper are the crown jewel of Gulf bottom fishing, and when the season's open, they're what everyone wants to catch. These crimson beauties average 3-8 pounds but can push 15-20 pounds if you're lucky. They're structure-oriented fish that live around reefs, wrecks, and ledges in 60-200 feet of water. Snapper are smart and can be picky eaters, but when they bite, they fight hard and make some of the best table fare you'll ever taste. The season typically runs through summer and early fall, and the crew knows exactly which spots produce the biggest fish.
Spanish Mackerel are speed demons that'll wake you up fast when they hit your line. These sleek fish average 1-3 pounds and are absolutely beautiful with their yellow spots and razor-sharp teeth. They school up near the surface and around structure, making them perfect targets for light tackle trolling or casting. Spanish Macks are most active in spring through fall and provide non-stop action when you find a school. They're also excellent eating when prepared fresh.
King Mackerel are the big brothers of the Mackerel family and one of the most sought-after sportfish in the Gulf. These torpedo-shaped predators can reach 20-50 pounds and make blistering runs that'll test your drag system. Kings patrol the edges of structure and blue water, hunting schools of baitfish. They're most abundant from spring through fall, and catching one is a real achievement. The crew knows how to rig the heavy tackle needed for these bruisers, and they'll coach you through the fight.
Grey Triggerfish might not win any beauty contests, but they're tough fighters and excellent eating. These oddball-looking fish have powerful jaws designed for crushing shellfish and can put a surprising bend in your rod. They're year-round residents around hard bottom and structure, typically running 2-5 pounds with some reaching 8-10 pounds. Triggers are notorious bait stealers, but once you hook one solid, they'll pull hard and make you work for it. They're also one of the most underrated fish on the dinner table.
