During spring and summer, they gather around structure in less than 120 feet - wrecks, jetties, rocky bottom, and old pilings. Males turn bright blue during spawning season and develop a distinctive head hump. What makes them fun is their aggressive nature - they'll hit both live bait and jigs, and once you find a school, you can usually catch several. They fight well until they break the surface, then give up quickly. Season runs May through December here. My tip: use squid strips on a two-hook rig and keep it moving slightly off bottom.

You'll find them around structure in 75-300 feet, though they move shallower during spring spawning season from February through May.
