Your day starts early at Homer Harbor, where you'll meet your captain and get the rundown on tackle, techniques, and what we're seeing out there. We'll head out into Kachemak Bay, typically running 30-45 minutes to reach our first spot depending on conditions and where the fish are biting. The scenery alone is worth the trip – you've got the Kenai Mountains rising up around you and often see sea otters, seals, and various seabirds. But let's be honest, you're here for the halibut. Our captains read the electronics like a book and know exactly where to set up over the structure these fish love. Expect to spend your day anchored over productive bottom, working heavy jigs and circle hook rigs in 100-200 feet of water. The boat is equipped with all the gear you need, including heavy conventional reels spooled with braided line that can handle the biggest fish.
Halibut fishing is all about getting your bait down to the bottom and keeping it there in the current. We run heavy conventional tackle – think Penn or Shimano reels loaded with 65-80 pound braid, paired with stout rods that can handle 2-4 pound sinkers. The standard rig is a sliding sinker setup with a 3-4 foot leader and a large circle hook. Fresh herring, salmon bellies, or chunks of rockfish make the best bait, though we'll also throw jigs when the fish are aggressive. The key is patience – halibut don't always slam the bait like salmon do. Sometimes it's just a subtle tap or the line going slack as the fish swims up with your offering. Our crew will coach you through setting the hook properly with circle hooks and fighting technique that'll save your back when you tie into a 100+ pounder. Don't worry if you've never targeted halibut before – we'll have you fishing like a pro within the first hour.
Pacific halibut are the ultimate prize for Alaska anglers, and for good reason. These flatfish are absolute giants – we regularly see fish over 100 pounds, with the real monsters pushing 200-300 pounds or more. What makes them so exciting isn't just their size, but their fight. A big halibut will use that broad, flat body like a sail underwater, creating incredible drag as it tries to get back to the bottom. They're ambush predators that lie camouflaged on sandy or muddy bottoms, waiting for bait fish, crabs, and other prey to swim by. In Homer waters, halibut are most active from May through September, with July and August typically producing the biggest fish as they move into shallower water to feed heavily before winter. Female halibut live much longer and grow much larger than males – those barn doors you're hoping to catch are typically 15-20+ year old females. The meat is absolutely top-notch too, with firm white fillets that taste amazing grilled, baked, or fried. Alaska regulations allow you to keep halibut within certain size limits, and our crew will help you measure and handle your catch properly.
