Salvelinus NamaycushLakers are the deep-water giants of our fishery, running 24-36 inches and often hitting 15-40 pounds. They stick to the coldest, deepest parts of Lake Michigan year-round, suspended mid-water or hugging bottom structure. Spring right after ice-out is prime time when they move shallower, but summer means going deep with downriggers. They're scrappy fighters with excellent white meat. Overcast days are best since they avoid bright light. My go-to tip for landing these fish is jigging - drop a Rapala Jigging Rap or soft plastic swimbait down to them and work it vertically.
