What to Expect on the Water
You'll meet us at 81 Dunlawton Ave for either a morning or afternoon departure, and we'll have everything ready to roll. The boat's loaded with top-shelf tackle, fresh bait that sharks can't resist, and all the ice you need to keep your catch fresh. Don't worry about licenses either – we've got your Florida fishing permits covered. The waters off Ponce Inlet are legendary for good reason. The inlet creates a natural highway where baitfish funnel through, and where there's bait, there are sharks. We're talking about productive fishing grounds that consistently produce Blacktip, Spinner, and Hammerhead sharks, plus some serious bonus species that'll have you talking about this trip for years. Captain Mike knows these waters like the back of his hand, and he'll put you on fish whether they're cruising the surface or hugging the bottom.
Techniques & Tackle
We run a combination approach that covers all the bases – bottom fishing with heavy weights and circle hooks for the bigger predators lurking in the depths, plus trolling patterns when we're hunting the more active species. Our tackle selection includes heavy-duty conventional reels spooled with 50-80 pound test line, because when a bull shark decides it doesn't want to come to the boat, you need gear that can handle the fight. We use a variety of baits depending on what's working best – fresh mackerel, bonito strips, and live bait when we can get our hands on it. The beauty of fishing these Atlantic waters is the variety. One minute you might be battling a lightning-fast Blacktip on the surface, the next you could be locked into a tug-of-war with a massive Sand Tiger that's testing every ounce of drag on your reel. Captain Mike will coach you through the fight, helping you work the fish properly and making sure you get the most out of every hookup.
Top Catches This Season
The Shortfin Mako Shark is the speed demon of our target species list, and catching one is like hooking onto a torpedo with teeth. These sharks are built for speed, hitting 45+ mph when they want to, and they're famous for their spectacular jumps when hooked. Makos typically run 6-8 feet in our waters, though we see bigger ones during peak season from late spring through early fall. What makes them so exciting to target is their aggressive nature – they'll absolutely demolish a bait and then put on an aerial show that'll have everyone on the boat scrambling for their phones. The Lemon Shark brings a different kind of fight to the table. These golden-colored predators are stocky, powerful fish that prefer to battle you in the depths rather than putting on a jumping show. They're more common during the warmer months and typically range from 5-7 feet in our area. Lemons have this habit of making long, steady runs that'll test your endurance and the boat's drag system. They're also one of the better eating sharks if you decide to keep one for the dinner table.
Bull Sharks are the brawlers of the bunch – thick, muscular, and absolutely relentless when hooked. These guys are year-round residents in our waters and they're not picky eaters, which makes them one of our most consistent targets. Bulls typically run 6-9 feet and they've got the attitude to match their size. When you hook into a bull shark, expect a knock-down, drag-out fight with plenty of head shaking and powerful runs. They're also one of the few shark species that regularly venture into shallow water and even freshwater, so you never know where you might encounter one. The Sand Tiger Shark rounds out our target list and they're absolutely prehistoric looking with those gnarly, protruding teeth. Don't let their intimidating appearance fool you though – Sand Tigers are actually pretty docile until you get one on the line. Then they turn into bulldozers, using their hefty 7-10 foot frames to put serious pressure on your tackle. They're more common during the cooler months and they tend to hang around structure, making them perfect targets for our bottom fishing approach.
