What to Expect on the Water
You'll be fishing from our 38' Custom Downeaster, built by the legendary Holland Boat Shop up in Maine. This isn't your typical charter boat - she's a serious fishing machine powered by a reliable Caterpillar diesel engine that'll get you to the fish quickly and smoothly. The boat's roomy layout gives all six anglers plenty of space to work, and you won't be bumping elbows when the action heats up. We've loaded her with top-shelf electronics including GPS, fishfinder, and sonar that'll help us locate schools and structure where the fish are holding. All your tackle is provided, along with all required safety gear, so you can focus on what matters - catching fish. The trip covers 1-6 guests, making it perfect for everything from solo adventures to family outings or corporate groups.
Techniques and Tackle
Inshore fishing in these New York waters requires knowledge of tides, structure, and seasonal patterns - that's where our experience really pays off. We'll be working a variety of techniques depending on conditions and what's biting. Drift fishing over sandy bottoms and rocky structure is a go-to method for fluke and sea bass, using bucktails tipped with squid or spearing. For striped bass, we might troll with umbrella rigs or chunk bait around bridges and drop-offs where these fish ambush prey. Live lining with bunker, herring, or eels can produce some of the biggest stripers when conditions are right. Our custom tackle setup includes everything from light spinning gear for smaller fish to heavier conventional outfits for when the big bass are feeding. The boat's electronics help us read the bottom structure and locate baitfish, but local knowledge of these waters is what really puts fish in the boat consistently.
Species You'll Want to Hook
Black sea bass are one of the most reliable catches in these waters, especially from late spring through fall. These chunky, hard-fighting fish love rocky bottoms and structure, and they'll test your drag when hooked near cover. They typically run 1-3 pounds in our area, with bigger fish possible during peak season. What makes sea bass so popular with anglers is their willingness to bite and their excellent table fare - they're absolutely delicious when prepared fresh.
Summer flounder, or fluke as we call them locally, are the ultimate flatfish challenge. These ambush predators lie buried in sand and mud, waiting to crush baitfish swimming overhead. Fluke fishing requires patience and technique - you need to feel the subtle bite and set the hook at just the right moment. The legal keepers start at 19 inches, but we regularly see fish in the 3-8 pound range, with doormat-sized specimens over 5 pounds always a possibility. Peak fluke season runs from May through September, with the biggest fish typically caught in early summer.
Striped bass are the crown jewel of Northeast fishing, and New York waters hold some fantastic populations. These silver-sided battlers can range from schoolie-sized fish around 20 inches up to true cows pushing 40+ pounds. Stripers are incredibly strong fighters that will test your equipment and skills. They're most active during spring and fall migrations, but resident fish can be caught throughout the warmer months. The combination of their fighting ability, size potential, and excellent eating quality makes striped bass every angler's favorite target species.
