What to Expect on the Water
Your morning starts early – that's when the fish are most active and the crowds haven't hit the water yet. Captain Brody will have you rigged up and ready to fish within minutes of leaving the dock. The beauty of Rockport's inshore fishing is the variety – one cast you might be working a grass flat for speckled trout, the next you're sight-casting to tailing redfish in knee-deep water. The shallow bays around Rockport are perfect for this style of fishing, with endless pockets, drop-offs, and structure that hold fish year-round. Don't worry about bringing gear – everything you need is provided, from quality rods and reels to a tackle box full of proven baits and lures that work in these specific waters.
Proven Techniques & Prime Spots
Captain Brody switches up techniques based on conditions and what the fish are telling him. Some days it's live shrimp under popping corks over grass beds, other days it's throwing soft plastics along spoil banks and drop-offs. When the redfish are shallow and spooky, he'll have you casting spoons or topwater plugs to cruising fish – there's nothing like watching a red blow up on a surface lure in two feet of water. The boat stays in the productive zones around Copano Bay, Aransas Bay, and the countless back lakes that most visiting anglers never see. These areas offer protection from wind while maintaining excellent fishing, and Captain Brody knows exactly when to fish each spot based on tides, weather, and seasonal patterns.
Customer Stories
"We had an incredible fishing trip, despite the 20+ mph winds. Captain Brody expertly navigated the bay, making the ride comfortable and enjoyable. He was friendly, personable, and made the whole experience fun. The fishing was fantastic—caught 3-4 undersize reds, one bull red that we released, and six slot reds that are now on the way to our table. I was really impressed with how well the day went, especially considering the wind!" - Laray
Species You'll Want to Hook
Southern Flounder are the ultimate ambush predators, lying perfectly camouflaged on sandy bottoms waiting for baitfish to swim overhead. These flatfish are most active during cooler months from October through March, when they move into the bays to feed before heading to deeper water to spawn. What makes flounder so exciting to catch is their aggressive strike – they'll absolutely crush a bait when they decide to eat. Most Rockport flounder run between 14-18 inches, with occasional doormat-sized fish pushing 20+ inches. They love live finger mullet bounced along the bottom, but soft plastic baits like Gulp shrimp work just as well when fished slow and steady.
Black Drum are the bulldogs of the bay, and Rockport's grass flats hold some serious fish. These bruisers can range from schooling puppy drum around 14-16 inches all the way up to monster bulls that'll test your drag and your arms. Black drum are year-round residents but fish best during spring and fall when they're most active. What sets them apart is their incredible pulling power – even a medium-sized drum will make multiple runs and really test your tackle. They're bottom feeders with a great sense of smell, so fresh dead shrimp or blue crab works perfectly. The bigger fish often cruise shallow flats in small groups, and when you hook into a 30+ pound bull drum, you'll know it immediately.
Sea Trout, specifically speckled trout, are probably the most popular target for Rockport anglers, and for good reason. These gorgeous fish are aggressive predators that'll hit both live and artificial baits with authority. The best trout fishing happens during spring and fall when water temperatures are ideal, but you can catch specs year-round if you know where to look. What makes trout so fun is their variety – you might catch schooling fish over grass beds using topwater plugs at dawn, then switch to deeper drop-offs with soft plastics later in the day. Rockport's trout typically run 15-20 inches, with trophy fish over 25 inches always a possibility. They're also excellent table fare, making them a customer favorite for anglers who want to take fish home.
Redfish are the crown jewel of Texas inshore fishing, and Rockport's shallow bays are absolutely loaded with them. These copper-colored fighters are available year-round and provide some of the most exciting fishing you'll find anywhere. Reds are incredibly adaptable – they'll eat live bait, artificials, and everything in between. What makes redfish special is their fight and their behavior. Slot-sized reds (20-28 inches) are perfect for the dinner table, while the bigger bull reds provide pure adrenaline with their powerful runs and stubborn attitude. During warmer months, you'll often find reds tailing in super shallow water, creating sight-fishing opportunities that'll get your heart pumping. They're also one of the smartest fish in the bay, so when you fool a wary red in clear, shallow water, it's a real accomplishment.
