10 Hour Trip - (Morning) – Destin
If you're serious about fishing and want to make the most of your time on the water, this 10-hour morning charter is your ticket to the best offshore action Destin has to offer. We're talking about a full day of fishing that gives you the chance to hit multiple spots, target different species, and really dial in on what's biting. With King of Kings Charters, you'll have plenty of time to explore the deeper waters where the big fish live, and trust me, that extra time makes all the difference when you're chasing trophy catches.
What to Expect on the Water
This isn't your typical half-day trip where you're watching the clock. Ten hours gives us the freedom to really fish smart and adapt to what's happening out there. We'll start the morning by heading to some prime bottom fishing spots where Red Snapper and Grouper hang out when they're in season. The beauty of having this much time is that if one area isn't producing, we can move around and find the action. You might find yourself bottom fishing for Grouper in the morning, then switching gears to troll for King Mackerel or Mahi Mahi in the afternoon. And if you're feeling adventurous, we can even set up for some shark fishing – there's nothing quite like the adrenaline rush of hooking into a monster that could be pushing 100 pounds or more. With a maximum of 6 anglers, everyone gets plenty of rod time and personal attention from the crew.
Techniques & Tackle Setup
We'll be running a variety of techniques depending on what we're targeting. For the bottom fishing, we're talking about heavy tackle setups with circle hooks and weights that'll get your bait down to where the Grouper and Snapper live – sometimes 80 to 120 feet deep. The crew will have you rigged up with fresh cut bait or live bait depending on what's working best. When we switch to trolling for pelagics like King Mackerel and Mahi, we'll spread out multiple lines with different lures and baits at varying depths. You might see us pulling everything from ballyhoo and cigar minnows to spoons and diving plugs. The 10-hour window also gives us time to try live bait fishing, which can be deadly effective for Kings and Cobia. All the gear is provided, but if you have lucky rods or preferred tackle, feel free to bring them along. The crew knows these waters like the back of their hand and will put you on the fish using time-tested local techniques.
Target Species
King Mackerel are the speed demons of the Gulf, and Destin's waters are loaded with them. These silver bullets can reach 30-40 pounds and will test your drag system and your arms. They're most active during the warmer months from spring through fall, and they love to hit fast-moving baits. What makes Kings so exciting is their initial run – when you hook one, it's going to scream line off your reel like nothing else. They're also excellent table fare with firm, white meat that's perfect for grilling or smoking.
Mahi Mahi, also called Common Dolphinfish, are probably the most colorful fighters you'll encounter out here. These fish are pure eye candy with their brilliant yellows and greens, and they put on an aerial show when hooked. Mahi typically run 10-25 pounds in these waters, though bigger bulls are always possible. They're structure-oriented fish, so we'll look for them around weed lines, floating debris, or temperature breaks. Spring through early fall is prime time, and they're fantastic eating with sweet, flaky meat.
Red Snapper are the holy grail of bottom fishing when they're in season. These ruby-red fighters are smart, strong, and absolutely delicious. They typically hang around structure in 60-120 feet of water, and a good-sized Snapper will give you a solid fight all the way to the boat. The season is regulated, but when it's open, there's nothing better than a cooler full of fresh Red Snapper fillets.
Spanish Mackerel are the smaller cousins of the Kings, but don't let their size fool you – they're lightning fast and great fun on lighter tackle. They're usually the first fish to show up in the spring and can be caught throughout the warmer months. Spanish Mackerel are perfect for anglers who want consistent action, and they make excellent bait for bigger fish too.
Gag Grouper are the bruisers of the bottom. These fish will head straight for the rocks when hooked, so you better be ready for a tug-of-war. Gags can reach 30-50 pounds in these waters and are known for their incredible strength and determination. They're ambush predators that love structure, and landing a big Gag is a real accomplishment. The meat is firm and mild, making them a favorite for fish dinners.
