5 Hour Morning/Afternoon Offshore Charter
Looking to test the waters without committing to a full day? This 5-hour offshore adventure with King of Kings Charters hits the sweet spot for first-time anglers and families wanting a taste of Destin's world-class fishing scene. We'll cruise out to productive nearshore waters where the action stays hot and the ride stays comfortable. Perfect for kids who might get restless on longer trips or anyone curious about how they'll handle being offshore. Don't let the shorter timeframe fool you – these waters are packed with hungry fish year-round, and five hours gives us plenty of time to put you on some serious action.
What to Expect on the Water
We keep things relaxed but productive on these half-day runs. You'll board our well-equipped charter boat accommodating up to 6 anglers, making it ideal for family groups or small parties of friends. We typically head out 3-8 miles offshore where the water color changes from that emerald green to deep blue – that's where the magic happens. The boat ride out takes about 20-30 minutes, giving you time to get your sea legs and watch Destin's famous white sand beaches fade into the distance. Once we hit our fishing grounds, we'll set up a trolling spread or anchor up for some bottom action, depending on what's biting best that day. The shorter trip length means we stay in calmer nearshore waters, so even those prone to seasickness usually do just fine.
Trolling Tactics & Bottom Rigs
Our bread and butter on these trips is trolling for pelagic species – that means we'll have multiple lines out behind the boat as we cruise at trolling speed, usually 6-8 knots. We run a mix of spoons, diving plugs, and rigged cigar minnows that perfectly mimic the baitfish these predators are hunting. When something hits, you'll know it – the reel screams and the rod bends over. We also switch things up with bottom fishing, dropping down live bait or cut bait on circle hooks to target reef fish. The bottom structure out here is fantastic, with artificial reefs, natural ledges, and rubble piles that hold fish. If you're interested in shark fishing, we can dedicate part of the trip to setting out heavy tackle with big baits – nothing gets the adrenaline pumping like a blacktip making multiple jumps on the surface.
Top Catches This Season
King Mackerel are the stars of our nearshore trolling game here in Destin. These silver bullets can stretch 20-40 pounds and make blistering runs when hooked. They're most active during the warmer months from April through October, but we see them nearly year-round. What makes kings so exciting is their speed – they'll hit a trolled bait at 25+ mph and immediately start peeling drag. Spanish Mackerel are smaller cousins to the kings, usually running 2-4 pounds, but they're scrappy fighters and excellent table fare. They show up in big schools, so when you find them, you can often catch several quickly.
Mahi Mahi, or common dolphinfish, are the most colorful fighters you'll encounter out here. These brilliant gold and green fish love floating debris and weed lines, and they put on an aerial show when hooked. Most of our mahi run 10-25 pounds, though we occasionally hook into bulls pushing 40+ pounds. They're more common in summer and fall but can show up any time conditions are right.
Blacktip Sharks are pure adrenaline on a fishing rod. These athletic predators average 3-6 feet and are famous for their spectacular jumps – some will clear the water completely multiple times during the fight. They're around year-round but most active in warmer water. What makes blacktips special is their attitude – they fight dirty, spinning and jumping until the very end.
Red Snapper are the holy grail of bottom fishing when they're in season (typically summer months). These ruby-red reef dwellers are incredibly strong for their size, making bulldogging runs back toward the bottom structure. They're also fantastic eating, which is why the season is so regulated and prized by local anglers.
