Lake Erie Walleye & Perch Charter - 6 Hours
There's nothing quite like a full day chasing walleye and perch on Lake Erie with plenty of time to work the productive spots without feeling rushed. This 6-hour charter gives you and up to two other anglers the chance to really dial in on what's biting, whether we're trolling for trophy walleye or dropping light tackle for scrappy perch. We'll launch from either the Cattaraugus Creek ramp in Silver Creek or the Dunkirk ramp, depending on where the fish are cooperating and what the lake conditions look like. With three target species and multiple techniques in play, there's always something happening on the end of your line.
What to Expect on the Water
This trip strikes the perfect balance between covering water and taking your time when we find the bite. The 6-hour window means we're not watching the clock - if the walleye are stacked up on a particular structure or the perch are going crazy in 25 feet of water, we can stay put and make the most of it. The boat launches from whichever ramp gives us the best shot at success that day. Silver Creek puts us closer to some fantastic walleye structure, while Dunkirk opens up different areas depending on seasonal patterns and weather. You'll spend part of the day trolling to locate and target walleye and lake trout, then switching gears to anchor up and work perch with live bait. It's hands-on fishing that keeps everyone engaged, and the smaller group size means plenty of personalized attention whether you're new to Lake Erie or a seasoned angler looking to dial in your technique.
Gear & Fishing Techniques
We've got all the rods, reels, and tackle dialed in for Lake Erie's unique conditions and the species we're targeting. For walleye and lake trout, we'll be trolling with diving planers, lead core, and downriggers to get our presentations down to where these fish are holding. The trolling spread typically includes spoons, stick baits, and crawler harnesses - whatever's been producing based on water temperature and time of year. When we switch over to perch fishing, we drop down to light spinning tackle with live minnows or emerald shiners on simple rigs. This hands-on approach gives everyone a chance to feel every bite and work the fish up from the bottom. The beauty of perch fishing is how active it keeps you - you're constantly jigging, watching your line, and setting hooks. All you need to bring is a valid New York fishing license and whatever snacks or drinks you want for the day. Everything else is handled, from the net to the cooler for your catch.
Target Species
American Yellow Perch are the bread and butter of Lake Erie fishing, and for good reason. These feisty little fighters typically run 8 to 12 inches, with the jumbos pushing 13 inches and beyond. They school up tight, so when you find them, the action can be non-stop with doubles and triples common. Perch bite best during daylight hours and can be found anywhere from 15 to 40 feet of water depending on the season. Spring and fall tend to produce the largest fish as they move shallow to feed heavily. What makes perch so addictive is the constant action - they're curious, aggressive, and once you locate a school, everyone on the boat is usually catching fish. Plus, they're hands-down some of the best eating that swims in freshwater.
Walleye are the crown jewel of Lake Erie and the fish that put this lake on the map for serious anglers. These golden predators average 2 to 4 pounds, with plenty of 5 to 8-pound fish and the occasional true trophy pushing double digits. Walleye can be caught year-round, but spring and fall offer some of the most consistent action as they move into shallower water to feed. They're structure-oriented fish that relate to drop-offs, humps, and underwater points, which is why our trolling patterns focus on these key areas. The fight might not be the flashiest, but that subtle head-shaking battle and the anticipation of seeing that white belly flash near the boat never gets old. Walleye are also incredibly versatile on the dinner table, making them a favorite for anglers who love to eat their catch.
Lake Trout add an element of surprise and serious pulling power to any Lake Erie trip. These deep-water dwellers can range from 3 to 15 pounds or more, with their silver flanks and spotted backs making them one of the most beautiful fish in the Great Lakes. Lakers prefer cooler water, so they're typically found in the deeper sections during summer months but can move shallower during spring and fall. When a lake trout hits your trolling setup, you'll know it immediately - they make long, powerful runs and fight hard all the way to the boat. The bigger fish especially will test your drag and give you a workout. While they're not as common as walleye and perch, hooking into a quality lake trout often becomes the highlight of the trip and creates those stories you'll be telling for years.
