You'll hunt in the clear waters of the Gulf Coast aboard our stable 35-footer, giving you plenty of room to gear up and move around between dive spots. Whether you're picking up a speargun for the first time or you've been freediving for years, this trip delivers solid action without burning your whole day.
What to Expect on the Water
We launch from Crystal River and make quick runs to proven honey holes along the Gulf Coast. The beauty of spearfishing these waters is the variety – one dive you're stalking a red snapper tucked under a ledge, the next you're lining up on a nice hogfish cruising over the rocks. Our captain knows these reefs like the back of his hand, so you'll spend more time underwater and less time running around looking for fish. The 35-foot boat handles the Gulf chop with ease, and there's plenty of deck space to spread out your gear. We keep things simple with ice and cold water on board, plus a professional guide who'll point you toward the best structure and help newer spearos get comfortable in the water.
Gear Setup & Diving the Reefs
Most of our regulars bring their own spearguns, masks, and fins – nothing beats gear that fits you perfectly. If you're just getting started or traveling light, we've got rental equipment available that'll get the job done. A basic Hawaiian sling or pole spear works great for hogfish, while a proper speargun gives you the range and power for bigger snapper hiding in the rocks. The water depth ranges from 15 to 40 feet on most spots, making it perfect for breath-hold diving without needing scuba gear. You'll want a good pair of gloves for handling fish and working around the limestone structure. Don't forget your Florida saltwater fishing license – it's required for spearfishing and the officers do check. We'll brief you on bag limits and size requirements before you hit the water, keeping everything legal and sustainable.
Species You'll Want to Hook
Red snapper are the crown jewel of Gulf Coast spearfishing, and Crystal River's reefs hold some beauties. These fish are smart and spooky – they'll often sit tight against the structure until you get within range, then bolt for deeper water. Look for them around 25-40 feet, especially near overhangs and crevices. Red snapper season has specific dates, but when they're open, there's nothing better on the dinner table. They fight hard on the way up and that bright red color makes for great photos.
Gag grouper love the same rocky bottom that attracts snapper, but they behave completely different. Gags are curious fish that'll often swim right up to check you out, giving you a perfect shot opportunity. They're usually found in 20-35 feet of water around Crystal River, and they can get surprisingly large – 20-30 pounders aren't uncommon. The trick with gags is getting a good stone shot because they'll try to hole up in the rocks if wounded. When grouper season is open, these fish are absolute table fare gold.
Grey snapper, or mangrove snapper as locals call them, are year-round residents on these reefs. They're smaller than their red cousins but make up for it with numbers and attitude. You'll often see schools of grey snapper working the edges of structure, picking off small baitfish and crustaceans. They're perfect for newer spearfishermen because they're less spooky and give you multiple shot opportunities. Don't let their size fool you – grey snapper are excellent eating and they're always legal to harvest within bag limits.
Red grouper prefer slightly deeper water than gags, usually hanging around 30-40 feet on the offshore structure. They're bottom-huggers that rely on camouflage, often looking like just another piece of coral or rock until you get close. Red grouper have a different season than gags, giving spearfishermen extended opportunities throughout the year. They're known for their firm white meat and they grow to impressive sizes in the Gulf of Mexico.
Hogfish are the speed demons of the spearfishing world around Crystal River. These pink and white beauties cruise the reefs looking for crabs and small fish, and they move fast when they spot danger. Hogfish require quick reflexes and good shot placement, but they're worth the effort – many consider them the best-tasting fish in the Gulf. You'll find them in 15-30 feet of water, often in small groups working over sandy patches between rock piles. Their unique pig-like snout and distinctive coloring make them easy to identify underwater.
