Private Full Day Offshore Salmon & Halibut Trip
When you're serious about putting fish in the cooler, Mark's Reel Fishing Adventures delivers the kind of offshore experience that separates the weekend warriors from the dedicated anglers. This isn't your typical harbor cruise – we're talking about a legitimate 8-hour fishing mission that starts before dawn and takes you up to 30 miles offshore where the big fish live. Captain Mark has been working these waters for years, and he knows exactly where to find the salmon runs and halibut holes that most guys can only dream about. You'll be targeting some of the Pacific's most sought-after species, from hard-fighting Chinook salmon to barn-door halibut that'll test your tackle and your back muscles.
What to Expect on the Water
The 5 AM departure isn't just for show – it gets you to the productive water when the fish are most active and beats the afternoon wind that can turn a great day into a rough ride. You and one other angler will have the boat to yourselves, which means no fighting for rail space or waiting your turn to work a hot bite. The trip runs seasonally from May 10th through September 30th, timed perfectly with the salmon runs and when the halibut are feeding heavy in preparation for winter. Captain Mark's got all the productive spots dialed in, from the salmon lanes where the Chinook and Coho stage before their river runs, to the rocky structure where lingcod and rockfish hold tight. He'll even swing by a scenic spot for photos before heading back to harbor – perfect for showing off your catch to the folks back home. Bring a cooler and some snacks because you'll be working hard out there, and staying fueled keeps you sharp when that rod doubles over.
Trolling Tactics & Gear
Offshore salmon fishing is all about covering water and presenting the right bait at the right depth. We'll be trolling with downriggers to get your lures down into the strike zone, typically anywhere from 40 to 120 feet depending on where the fish are marking on the sonar. For Chinook, we'll pull herring, anchovies, and proven spoons like Coho Killers and Coyote spoons in colors that match the current bait schools. The Coho usually hit closer to the surface, so we'll run some gear in the top 60 feet when they're around. When we switch gears for halibut, it's all about getting to the bottom with heavy jigs, live bait, or cut herring on circle hooks. The lingcod and rockfish come as bonus fish when you're working the structure – they'll nail almost anything that looks like an easy meal. All the rods, reels, tackle, and bait are provided, but you'll need to grab your fishing license and salmon tags before we head out. There are shops nearby the harbor that can set you up with everything you need.
Top Catches This Season
The Chinook salmon are the kings of these waters for good reason – these fish can push 30 pounds or more, and when one grabs your bait, you'll know it immediately. They're built for the open ocean, with broad shoulders and stamina that'll have you working the drag system and pumping the rod for what feels like forever. Peak season runs from late June through August when the mature fish are staged offshore before heading to their natal rivers. What makes them so special is their rich, red meat that's perfect for the barbecue or smoker, plus the bragging rights that come with landing a legitimate king salmon. The Coho salmon might be smaller, typically in the 8 to 12-pound range, but they make up for size with pure athleticism. These silver rockets will jump, run, and do everything possible to throw your hook. They're abundant from July through September and their lighter, flaky meat is outstanding on the dinner table. Pacific halibut are the bottom dwellers that can make your trip legendary – while most run 10 to 40 pounds, there's always the chance of hooking into a genuine barn door that could weigh 100 pounds or more. They're ambush predators that lie flat on the sandy bottom waiting for bait fish to swim by, and when you're jigging over productive structure, the bite can be explosive. Lingcod are the toothy predators that add excitement to any bottom fishing session, with their aggressive strikes and impressive size potential reaching 40 pounds or more.
