Belmar Fluke Trip: Fill Your Cooler
Looking to load up on some serious flatfish? Our Belmar fluke charters from June through September put you right in the heart of New Jersey's best summer flounder action. These aren't your typical half-day trips – we're talking 6 to 8 hours of dedicated fluke fishing with captains who know every bump, hole, and piece of structure where these fish stack up. Whether you're bringing the kids for their first taste of serious fishing or you're a seasoned angler looking to put meat in the freezer, we've got you covered. With room for up to 6 anglers, this is the perfect setup for families, small groups of friends, or corporate outings where everyone goes home with stories and fresh fish.
What to Expect on the Water
Your day starts early at Belmar Marina, where our crew will have the boat rigged and ready to roll. We'll head out to our proven fluke grounds – spots we've been fishing for years that consistently produce keeper-sized summer flounder. The beauty of Belmar fishing is the variety of structure we can hit in a single trip. One minute we're drifting over a wreck in 40 feet of water, the next we're working the edges of deeper channels where big doormats like to ambush baitfish. Our captains read the conditions daily and adjust the game plan accordingly. If the wind's up, we'll tuck into more protected waters. If it's calm, we might venture out to some of the deeper wrecks that hold the bigger fish. The crew handles all the technical stuff – finding fish, setting up drifts, and making sure your bait presentation is dialed in. All you need to do is feel for that telltale tap-tap-tap of a fluke picking up your offering, then set the hook and fight the fish to the boat.
Tackle and Techniques
Fluke fishing is all about getting your bait down to the bottom and keeping it in the strike zone as you drift. We run conventional tackle setups with 20 to 30-pound class gear – heavy enough to handle the big fish but light enough to feel those subtle bites that fluke are famous for. The key is using enough weight to maintain bottom contact while drifting, usually anywhere from 4 to 8 ounces depending on current and depth. Our go-to rigs include bucktails tipped with strip baits, Gulp artificials, or live killies when we can get them. Fluke have excellent eyesight and can be picky, so having the right presentation is crucial. The crew will show first-time fluke fishermen how to work the bottom, how to distinguish between a bite and just dragging over structure, and when to set the hook. We also carry a variety of backup tackle and terminal gear, so if you lose a rig to the bottom or a big fish, we'll get you right back in action without missing a beat.
Summer Flounder: The Fluke
Summer flounder, or fluke as we call them here in Jersey, are hands-down one of the most popular inshore targets along the entire East Coast. These flatfish are ambush predators that bury themselves in sand or mud with just their eyes and mouth exposed, waiting for unsuspecting baitfish to swim by. What makes fluke so exciting to catch is their unpredictable nature – they can be finicky one day and aggressive the next. The fish we target range from keeper-sized 18-inchers up to genuine doormats pushing 8 to 10 pounds or more. June marks the beginning of prime season as water temperatures climb and the fish move into their summer feeding patterns. By July and August, we're seeing consistent action with good numbers of keepers mixed in with plenty of throwbacks. September can be absolutely dynamite as the fish start fattening up before their fall migration. Fluke are also fantastic table fare – their mild, flaky white meat is perfect for everything from simple pan-frying to more elaborate preparations. Many of our regular customers specifically target fluke because they know they're going home with a cooler full of premium eating fish that the whole family will enjoy.
