Finding Brookies: World Record Waters Await
Here's the deal—if you're serious about chasing massive Brook Trout, you need to fish where the legends were born. The Nipigon River system isn't just another pretty spot on the map. This is where the 14.5-pound World Record Brook Trout was hauled out back in 1914, and these waters are still cranking out absolute giants today. I'm talking about purpose-built fishing for anglers who want their personal best, not a relaxing afternoon tossing flies at stockers. We'll hunt these square-tails across three world-class fisheries depending on conditions: the fast currents of the historic Nipigon River, the deep structure of Lake Nipigon, and the rugged shorelines of Lake Superior where the legendary "Coaster" Brook Trout subspecies roam.
What to Expect on the Water
This isn't a numbers game—it's about quality over quantity and making every opportunity count. You'll be fishing entirely from "OFFline," my premium 18-foot Lund Tyee rigged with a 175HP Mercury Verado that I've specifically optimized for high-end trout tactics. I've put serious money and time into this boat because it gives fly fishermen a rock-solid, spacious platform for clean casts without wave slap spooking shallow fish. It works just as beautifully for traditional spinning, casting, and deep-water trolling setups. The boat handles a maximum of 3 guests, which is perfect for 1-2 fly anglers or up to 3 traditional gear anglers, with plenty of room to store your high-end rods and equipment. We'll put in a full 6 hours of actual fishing time, not counting travel, and I'll work my tail off using a lifetime of local boating experience to read the patterns and put you on the fish of a lifetime. The base rate covers one angler, with additional guests at $100 per person.
Tactics That Put Fish in the Net
The beauty of this system is the variety of techniques we can deploy depending on season, water levels, and temperature. On the Nipigon River, we're targeting current breaks, deep pools, and undercut banks where big brookies ambush prey. I'll have you working streamers through the heavy water or dropping nymphs into the bubble lines. When we're on Lake Nipigon, it's all about reading the structure—we're trolling the drop-offs, casting to rocky points, or working the weed edges where these fish hunt. Lake Superior fishing is a whole different beast entirely. The Coaster Brook Trout here are absolute tanks, and we'll be working the rocky shorelines, river mouths, and thermal areas where they patrol. I provide all the high-quality rods, reels, tackle, and safety gear you'll need, though fly anglers are welcome to bring their favorite setups. We'll adjust tactics throughout the day based on what the fish are telling us, and I'll teach you to read the water like the locals do.
Species You'll Want to Hook
Brook Trout in the Nipigon system are something special—these aren't your typical 8-inch creek fish. We're targeting specimens that regularly push 3-5 pounds, with legitimate shots at fish over 6 pounds and the occasional true giant that'll make your knees shake. Spring and early summer are prime time when these fish are aggressive and feeding heavily after ice-out, but fall can produce some of the biggest fish of the year as they bulk up for winter. What makes these Brook Trout so exciting is their explosive fight and the fact that they're completely wild. They'll make blistering runs, jump like salmon, and test every knot you've tied. The Coaster subspecies we target on Lake Superior are even more special—these are Brook Trout that have adapted to big water living, growing larger and fighting harder than their stream cousins. They're nomadic fish that follow the baitfish migrations, making them a real challenge to pattern but absolutely worth the effort when you connect with one. These fish average larger than typical brookies and have that distinctive Lake Superior attitude that'll remind you why you started fishing in the first place.
Time to Book Your Spot
Look, I can't control the weather or guarantee the fish will cooperate, but I can promise you this—I'm not a lazy guide. I'll work tenaciously hard to give you the best shot at your personal best Brook Trout in some of the most legendary trout waters on the planet. This trip includes a delicious lunch and non-alcoholic drinks on board, and we can even arrange an optional wilderness shore lunch if you want to celebrate a good catch. Any fish you land within legal regulations are yours to keep, and I'll gladly clean your catch for you. Just make sure you bring a valid Ontario fishing license, polarized sunglasses, a hat, non-spray sunscreen, and high-quality weather-appropriate clothing—these waters can throw everything from blazing sun to freezing rain at you in the same day.
