Captain's Pack: Half Day Night & Full Day Trip
When you're serious about fishing Lake Ontario, you don't mess around with half measures. QuickDraw Sport Fishing's Captain's Pack is built for anglers who want to maximize their time on the water and give themselves the best shot at landing the big ones. This isn't your typical day trip – we're talking about a full 12-hour commitment spread across two sessions that'll have you fishing prime time slots when the salmon and trout are most active. Starting with a 4-hour evening run at 4:00 PM, followed by a complete 8-hour charter the next day, you'll cover more water and hit more productive zones than any single trip could offer.
What to Expect on the Water
You'll be fishing aboard our rock-solid 1983 Trojan 36' International – a proven platform that's seen thousands of successful trips out of Waterport. With a wide 13-foot beam, this boat stays stable even when the lake gets a little choppy, which means you can focus on fighting fish instead of fighting seasickness. The full galley keeps your drinks cold and snacks handy, while the onboard restroom means no cutting trips short. Your group of up to 4 anglers will have plenty of elbow room to work the rods without getting tangled up. We launch from either Leonard's Landing or Captain's Cove depending on conditions, but both put us right in the heart of Lake Ontario's most productive salmon and trout waters. The evening session targets the twilight bite when fish move shallow to feed, while the full day trip lets us work everything from near-shore structure to deeper offshore haunts.
Trolling Tactics & Gear
We run a proven trolling spread that's been dialed in over years of chasing Lake Ontario's premier gamefish. Downriggers are the backbone of our setup, letting us precisely control depths from 15 feet down to 100+ feet depending on where the fish are holding. We'll typically run a mix of spoons, plugs, and flasher-fly combinations – classics like Michigan Stingers, Magnum Tadpoles, and Pro-Troll Rotochips that have been putting fish in the boat for decades. The rods are medium-heavy trolling sticks matched with line counter reels, so you always know exactly how much line you've got out. Lead core and copper lines help us cover the water column efficiently, while our fish finder keeps us on the schools. Don't worry if you've never run downriggers before – we'll walk you through the whole process, from setting depths to clearing lines when a fish hits. The beauty of this extended format is we can adjust tactics as conditions change, switching from shallow morning patterns to deeper afternoon programs without missing a beat.
Species You'll Want to Hook
Chinook Salmon are the undisputed kings of Lake Ontario, and for good reason. These bruisers commonly hit 20-30 pounds, with fish over 35 pounds caught every season. Kings are most active during the cooler months of spring and fall, but summer fishing can be outstanding when you find them in the thermocline. When a King hits your downrigger, you'll know it immediately – they make blistering runs that'll strip 100+ yards of line before you can blink. The fight typically lasts 15-20 minutes of pure adrenaline, with multiple jumps and deep dives that'll test every knot in your setup. What makes them so special is their sheer power and the way they use the open water to their advantage.
Coho Salmon might be smaller than their Chinook cousins, but they make up for it with acrobatic fights that'll leave you breathless. These silver rockets average 8-15 pounds and are absolute aerial artists, often jumping 6+ times during a single fight. Cohos tend to school up more than Kings, so when you find them, you can often boat several fish in quick succession. They're particularly active during dawn and dusk periods, making them perfect targets for our evening sessions. The meat is exceptional too – many anglers actually prefer Coho on the dinner table for their firm texture and mild flavor.
Brown Trout are the wildcards of Lake Ontario, capable of growing to truly massive proportions while remaining incredibly wary and difficult to fool. These bronze-backed beauties can exceed 20 pounds and are known for their deliberate, powerful fights. Browns often hug structure and drop-offs, making them perfect targets for our near-shore trolling patterns. They're most active during low-light conditions, which plays perfectly into our evening/morning schedule. Landing a big lake-run Brown is considered the pinnacle of Great Lakes fishing – they're smart, strong, and absolutely gorgeous fish.
Steelhead Trout bring a different kind of excitement to the program. These chrome-bright fighters are built for speed and endurance, making long runs and sustained fights that can last 20+ minutes. Steelhead average 6-12 pounds but fight like fish twice their size, using their incredible stamina to wear down tackle and test your drag settings. They're particularly abundant during spring and fall runs, but resident fish provide action throughout the summer months. What sets Steelhead apart is their never-give-up attitude – they'll keep fighting right up until the net touches water.
