They're aggressive biters that'll hit live shrimp, cut bait, or small jigs readily. March through September is prime time when they're spawning and feeding heavily. What makes them popular is they're excellent table fare and often show up as a bonus when we're targeting bigger snappers or grouper. Pro tip: fish for them at night when they feed most actively - drop your bait right on the bottom near structure and hang on.
Mycteroperca PhenaxScamp Grouper are the chocolate-brown beauties with dark blotches and those signature long tail rays that make them easy to spot. Most run 4-6 pounds, but we've seen them push 20+ pounds out here. They live around structure like wrecks, ledges, and reefs in 75-300 feet, ambushing anything that swims by. February through May is peak season when they move shallower to spawn.
