Private 8 Hour Marquesas Keys Fishing Adventure
If you're looking for some of the best fishing in the Florida Keys, this full-day charter to the Marquesas Keys is going to blow you away. We're talking about a 25-mile run west of Key West into waters that most anglers never get to fish. Captain Tony will get you out there on Easy Does It, a 25-foot Conch center console that's built for these longer runs and handles the open water like a dream. The Marquesas Keys are about as remote as it gets in South Florida – no crowds, no pressure from other boats, just you and some of the most productive fishing grounds in the region.
What to Expect on the Water
This isn't your typical half-day trip around Key West harbor. We're making a serious run to reach the Marquesas, which puts us in a completely different class of fishing. The ride out takes about an hour, depending on conditions, but it's worth every minute once you see what these waters hold. The area is a mix of shallow flats, deeper channels, and structure that creates the perfect storm for holding fish. You'll be fishing both inshore-style on the flats and moving to nearshore spots where the bigger fish cruise. The 25-foot Conch gives us the range and stability to fish it all properly, with plenty of room for up to four anglers to work without getting in each other's way. Keep in mind this trip is weather-dependent – when it's rough, it's really rough out there, so we'll only go when conditions are right for a safe and productive day.
Techniques and Tackle
The beauty of fishing the Marquesas is the variety of techniques you'll use throughout the day. We start early and work different areas depending on tides, wind, and where the fish are showing up. On the flats, we're sight fishing with live bait and artificials – watching for tailing fish, cruising shadows, and nervous water that gives away what's underneath. The water clarity out here is phenomenal, so you'll actually see a lot of your targets before you cast to them. When we move to the nearshore structure and channels, we switch gears to live bait fishing, trolling, and working the edges where the bottom drops off. Captain Tony keeps all the tackle on board, from light spinning gear for the flats work to heavier conventional setups for when we hook into something that wants to make a long run. The key is staying mobile and adapting to what the fish are doing that day – some trips we spend more time on the flats, others we focus on the deeper water.
Top Catches This Season
Tarpon are the marquee species out here, especially from April through July when the big schools move through the area. These aren't just any tarpon – we're talking about fish in the 80 to 150-pound range that will test every bit of your tackle and technique. They show up in the channels and along the edges of the flats, and when you hook one in this clear, open water, you're in for the fight of your life. Permit are another world-class target that keeps serious anglers coming back. The Marquesas flats hold some of the biggest permit in the Keys, fish that can top 30 pounds and are notorious for their finicky feeding behavior. When you do fool one into eating, it's pure magic – they make screaming runs and fight like they're twice their size.
Cobia cruise these waters year-round but really show up in numbers during the spring and early summer months. They're curious fish that will come up to investigate the boat, giving you sight fishing opportunities you won't find in many other places. A big cobia will go 40 to 60 pounds and fight dirty, diving for structure and making powerful runs that will have your arms burning. Barracuda are the speed demons of the group – they hit hard and fast, often airborne before you know what happened. The 'cudas out here run bigger than what you'll find closer to shore, with fish over 20 pounds not uncommon when we find the right schools.
Time to Book Your Spot
This top-rated charter fills up fast, especially during peak season when the tarpon and permit fishing is at its best. The Marquesas Keys represent some of the last truly wild fishing in South Florida – no development, minimal boat traffic, and fish that haven't seen every lure in the tackle box. It's the kind of fishing that makes stories you'll tell for years, whether you're an experienced angler looking for your next trophy or someone who wants to experience world-class fishing in one of the most beautiful settings imaginable. The 8-hour format gives us the time to really work the area properly and adapt to conditions as they change throughout the day. Remember to bring plenty of sunscreen, snacks, and drinks – we're a long way from civilization out there, but that's exactly what makes it special.
