Heavy tackle is mandatory - these fish will humble light gear in a hurry.
Rachycentron CanadumCobia are sight-fishing favorites that average 30-50 pounds and can push 100+ pounds. These brown, shark-looking fish cruise shallow structure - reefs, wrecks, buoys - usually in 30-70 feet of water during spring and summer. What makes them special is you can often see them swimming just under the surface, making for exciting sight-casting opportunities. They're solitary fish, strong fighters, and absolutely excellent on the table with firm white meat. Spring migration from April through June is prime time when they're moving through our area to spawn. My go-to technique is bucktail jigs in the 4-8 ounce range - color doesn't matter much. When you spot one, cast ahead of where it's swimming and work that jig with sharp jerks. They'll usually eat it or ignore it - not much in between.
Mycteroperca MicrolepisGag Grouper are the bulldogs of the reef, averaging 20 inches but capable of reaching 50+ inches and 80 pounds. These mottled gray fighters love hanging around offshore reefs, wrecks, and rocky structure in 40-200 feet of water. You'll find them year-round here, but spring and fall offer the best action when they're more active. What makes them special is that bone-jarring initial strike followed by their signature move - diving straight back to structure to try and break you off. They're also some of the best eating fish in the ocean. Here's the key: soon as you feel that thump, lock down your drag and don't let them get their head down. Use heavy tackle, circle hooks, and live pinfish or cut bait. Keep that rod tip low and muscle them up before they know what hit them.
