Buoy 10 Columbia River Crabbing Guided Trip
There's nothing quite like pulling fresh Dungeness crab from the mouth of the Columbia River, and Buoy 10 is where it all happens. This shared crabbing trip puts you right in the heart of one of the Pacific Northwest's most productive crab fisheries, where the Columbia meets the Pacific Ocean. You'll be fishing alongside just one other angler in our small group setup, giving you plenty of room to work and learn without feeling crowded. Wade brings decades of experience to these waters, and he knows exactly where the crabs are staging up. The boat is comfortable, the gear is top-notch, and the crabbing action speaks for itself when conditions align.
What to Expect on the Water
Your day starts at the Astoria marina, where you'll meet Wade and get familiar with the boat before heading out to the crabbing grounds. The ride to Buoy 10 gives you a chance to see the massive Columbia River Bar and feel the transition from river to ocean. Once we reach the fishing area, you'll learn how to bait crab pots with the freshest bait available and drop them at optimal depths where Dungeness crabs are actively feeding. The beauty of crabbing is the anticipation – every time you pull a pot, you never know if you'll find a keeper-sized male or need to toss back undersize crabs and females. Wade will teach you how to measure crabs properly and identify the difference between keepers and throwbacks. Between pot pulls, you'll have time to take in the scenery and maybe spot sea lions, harbor seals, or even gray whales migrating through the area.
Crabbing Techniques & Gear
We fish with commercial-grade crab pots loaded with the kind of bait that drives Dungeness crabs wild – usually fresh fish heads, chicken, or other oily baits that create a scent trail in the current. Each pot gets marked with a buoy system that Wade monitors closely, and the timing between drops and pulls is crucial for success. You'll learn to read the tides and understand why certain areas produce better than others depending on the current flow and bottom structure. The boat carries all necessary measuring tools, and Wade will show you the proper technique for handling live crabs safely. Most of our crabbing happens in 40 to 80 feet of water, where mature Dungeness crabs hunt for food along the sandy and muddy bottom. The key is patience – good crabbing requires letting the pots soak long enough to attract crabs but not so long that they eat the bait and leave.

Target Species
Dungeness crab is the crown jewel of Pacific Northwest crabbing, and the Columbia River mouth produces some of the finest specimens you'll find anywhere. These crabs are incredibly smart and can grow up to 10 inches across the shell, with males being the only legal keepers at 6.25 inches minimum. They're most active during incoming tides when they move into shallower water to feed on clams, small fish, and other bottom dwellers. Peak season runs from December through August, with the best action typically happening from late winter through early summer when the crabs are at their heaviest after molting. What makes Dungeness crab so special is their sweet, delicate meat that's completely different from East Coast varieties. The meat-to-shell ratio is outstanding, and a good day of crabbing can fill your freezer with some of the best eating you'll find in the Pacific. The challenge and reward of crabbing keeps anglers coming back – there's real skill involved in reading the water, timing your drops, and knowing when to move spots for better action.
