Wyoming Mountain Goat Hunt - 9 Days Guided
When you're ready to test yourself against one of North America's most challenging hunts, Saddle Horn Outfitters delivers a world-class mountain goat experience in Wyoming's rugged high country. This isn't your typical weekend hunt - we're talking 9 days of pure dedication, with 7 full hunting days that'll push your limits and reward your persistence. Each hunter gets personal attention since we take just one hunter per trip, meaning your guide's focus stays locked on putting you in position for that trophy billy. The mountains don't give up their goats easily, but that's exactly what makes this hunt so rewarding when you finally connect.
Inside the Hunt
Your mountain goat adventure kicks off early each morning when we pick you up from your lodging. We'll grab breakfast on the move because daylight in goat country is precious, and these animals are most active during the cooler parts of the day. The hunt style is pure spot-and-stalk - no sitting in blinds or tree stands here. We use a combination of 4x4 trucks, UTVs, and horseback to access the remote areas where mature billies live. Depending on which unit we're hunting, you might stay in comfortable hotels and motels, or we could set up spike camps right in the heart of the action. The Teton Basin hunts are particularly special - we pack in with horses to establish remote camps, living on freeze-dried meals and whatever snacks we can carry. It's primitive, but being that close to prime goat habitat makes all the difference. Every day means long hours behind the glass, picking apart cliffsides and ridge lines until we spot that white coat against the rocks.
Tracking Tips & Terrain
Mountain goat hunting is all about the glass and your legs. We spend serious time with high-quality optics, systematically glassing every ledge, cliff face, and alpine meadow where goats might be feeding or bedding. The terrain is steep and unforgiving - think loose rock, exposed ridges, and elevation changes that'll test your conditioning. Once we locate a good billy, the real work begins. Goats live in terrain that seems impossible to navigate, but they always have escape routes planned. We approach from below whenever possible, using natural terrain features to stay hidden. The key is patience and reading the wind - goats have incredible eyesight and will spot movement from remarkable distances. Your shot might come at ranges from 100 to 400 yards, depending on the terrain and approach options. We carry everything needed for field care and meat preservation, including game bags and cooling methods for the high-quality meat these animals provide.
Target Game Breakdown
Wyoming mountain goats are perfectly adapted survivors that make their home in some of the most challenging terrain in North America. Mature billies typically weigh between 180-300 pounds and sport thick, muscular builds that help them navigate cliff faces with ease. The best hunting happens from late August through October when goats are moving more frequently and weather conditions remain manageable for hunters. What makes goat hunting so special is the combination of their impressive horns - both billies and nannies grow sharp, curved black horns, but mature billies develop thicker bases and better overall mass. These animals can live 15+ years in the wild, and older billies often become solitary, making them even more challenging to locate and approach. Their white coats provide perfect camouflage against snow and light-colored rock, while their incredible balance and climbing ability means they can escape to terrain that seems impossible to reach. Goat meat is surprisingly excellent - lean, mild-flavored, and perfect for steaks, roasts, and sausage making. The hide makes beautiful rugs and wall mounts, and those horns create striking European-style mounts that showcase the unique character of these high-country athletes.
