Sunset Fishing Trip in North Carolina
Picture this: you're out on the water as the sun starts painting the sky in brilliant oranges and purples, your lines are set, and you've got the best chance of the day to hook into some serious fish. That's what our 3-hour sunset fishing adventure off Oakland Island delivers every single time. We're talking about prime feeding time when Spanish Mackerel are actively hunting, sharks are cruising the waters, and if you're lucky, a pod of dolphins might just cruise by to check out what all the fuss is about. This isn't some crowded party boat situation either - we keep it intimate with just 5 anglers max, so everyone gets plenty of room to fish and actually enjoys the experience.
What to Expect on the Water
When you step aboard with Seabbatical Charters, you're getting the real deal. We head out from Oakland Island right when the afternoon bite starts heating up, which happens to coincide perfectly with some of the most beautiful light you'll ever see on the water. The vibe is relaxed but focused - we're here to catch fish, but we're also here to soak in one of nature's best daily shows. Your captain knows these waters like the back of their hand, reading the conditions and adjusting our approach based on what the fish are telling us. Some days they're stacked up on structure, other days we're covering water until we find the bait schools. The small group size means you get personalized attention whether you're a seasoned angler or this is your first time dropping a line in saltwater.
Trolling Tactics & Gear
We fish smart out here, which means trolling is our bread and butter for covering water and finding active fish. We'll have multiple lines out at different depths and speeds, using everything from spoons and diving plugs to live bait when the situation calls for it. The beauty of trolling during sunset hours is that predators are actively feeding, so we're not just hoping for a bite - we're putting baits where hungry fish are already looking for dinner. All the gear you need is provided, from heavy-duty trolling rods that can handle anything from a screaming Spanish Mackerel to a bull shark, down to the terminal tackle that's proven to work in these waters. If you've got your own lucky rod, bring it along, but our setups are dialed in for exactly what we're targeting out there.
Top Catches This Season
King Mackerel are the crown jewel of our offshore trips, and for good reason. These fish are pure muscle and speed, often hitting trolled baits so hard you'll think you snagged the bottom until that drag starts screaming. Kings in our waters typically run anywhere from 15 to 40 pounds, with the occasional trophy pushing 50-plus. Late spring through early fall gives you the best shot at hooking up, and evening hours are prime time since they're actively hunting baitfish near the surface. What makes catching a King so special is the fight - they'll make multiple runs, jump clear out of the water, and test every knot you tied that morning.
Mahi Mahi are hands down the most colorful fighters you'll encounter out there. These guys light up in brilliant blues, greens, and golds when they're hooked, putting on a show both above and below the surface. They're aggressive feeders that love our trolled baits, especially around floating debris or weed lines. Mahi typically range from 10 to 25 pounds in our area, though bigger bulls occasionally cruise through. Peak season runs from late spring into summer, and they're notorious for traveling in schools - hook one and there's a good chance his buddies are nearby. The bonus with Mahi is they're absolutely delicious on the dinner table.
Blacktip Sharks add serious excitement to any trip, especially when they start jumping and spinning once hooked. These athletic predators are common in our waters during warmer months, typically running 3 to 6 feet long. They're opportunistic feeders that will hit trolled baits meant for other species, turning a routine mackerel fight into something much more memorable. Blacktips are perfect for anglers wanting to experience shark fishing without dealing with something too massive to handle safely.
Bull Sharks represent the heavy hitters of our local shark population. These powerful predators can show up any time of year but are most active during summer months when water temperatures peak. Bulls are built like tanks and fight accordingly - no fancy jumps or speed runs, just raw power that will test your back muscles and your drag system. They're ambush predators that patrol our waters looking for easy meals, making them prime candidates for our trolling spread. Landing a bull shark is definitely a bucket list experience that you'll be talking about for years.
