3/4 Day Private Charter – 6 Hours
Six hours on the water is where serious fishing happens in the Bahamas. This isn't your typical half-day run – we're talking about a proper charter that gives you time to work the deeper waters where the big fish hang out. Departing at 8:00 AM sharp, you and up to five buddies get the boat to yourselves, plus all the gear, licenses, and bottled water you'll need. At $1,200 for the whole group, it's a solid deal for prime fishing time in some of the best offshore waters you'll find anywhere.
What to Expect on the Water
We'll push out past the shallow flats and head for the drop-offs where the action really kicks off. The beauty of a 6-hour window is that we're not rushed – if the bite is slow in one spot, we've got time to move around and find where they're feeding. The Bahamian waters out here are crystal clear, so you can actually watch fish coming up from the depths to hit your bait. You'll be working waters that range from 50 feet down to several hundred, depending on what species we're targeting that day. The boat's equipped with quality rods and reels, plus we'll have a good selection of live bait and lures ready to go. Don't worry about bringing anything except your appetite for fishing – we've got the rest covered, including all the required licenses.
Techniques & Tackle Setup
We'll be running a mix of trolling and bottom fishing depending on conditions and what's biting. For the pelagic species like mahi and king mackerel, we'll pull lures and ballyhoo behind the boat at different depths and distances. The bottom fishing setup uses heavier tackle to get down to where the grouper and snapper live around structure and ledges. You'll be working with medium to heavy action rods – nothing too crazy, but sturdy enough to handle fish in the 20-40 pound range. We'll switch up the techniques as the day goes on, reading the water and adjusting to what the fish want. Live bait works great out here, especially for the bigger predators, but artificials can be just as effective when you find active fish. The key is staying mobile and being ready to adapt when one method isn't producing.
Top Catches This Season
Red Grouper are the bread and butter of these deeper water trips. These chunky bottom dwellers love hanging around rocky ledges and coral heads in 80-150 feet of water. They're ambush predators that'll slam a bait dropped right in front of their face, and they fight hard on the way up, using every bit of structure they can find. Most of our grouper run 5-15 pounds, but don't be surprised if you hook into something bigger. They're fantastic eating and one of the most reliable species we target out here.
King Mackerel are speed demons that'll test your drag and your arms. These silver bullets can hit 30+ pounds and they make blistering runs that'll have your reel screaming. Spring through fall is prime time, and they love both live bait and fast-moving lures. The fight is what gets people hooked on kings – they're fast, they jump, and they never give up easy. Plus, they make excellent steaks and fillets when prepared right.
Mahi Mahi are probably the most exciting fish we chase out here. These colorful fighters put on a show with their acrobatics and that brilliant gold-green coloration. They school up around floating debris and weed lines, often in water that's deep blue and crystal clear. A good mahi will run 10-25 pounds, though we see bigger ones throughout the year. They're aggressive feeders and absolutely delicious – firm white meat that's perfect for the grill.
Hogfish are a local favorite that most visitors haven't heard of, but they're prized by anyone who's tried them. These weird-looking fish have a pig-like snout and are considered some of the best eating in the ocean. They're bottom dwellers that like sandy areas mixed with coral, usually in 30-100 feet of water. They're not huge fighters, but they're tricky to hook and absolutely worth it for the dinner table.
Great Barracuda are the apex predators out here, and hooking into a big one is something you won't forget. These toothy missiles can stretch 4-5 feet long and hit baits with explosive strikes. They're curious fish that'll often follow lures right to the boat, giving you a good look at those impressive teeth. While they're not great table fare due to ciguatera concerns in larger fish, the smaller ones are fine to eat, and they're primarily targeted for the sport of it.
