Wigeon show up consistently from October through March, with numbers peaking during cold snaps when northern birds move south. Hunters love them for their unique appearance and quality meat - they're vegetarians, so the taste is clean and mild. These birds are social and respond well to calling, especially their signature whistle. The secret with wigeon is hunting areas near grass flats or agricultural fields where they like to feed. Set up between their roosting and feeding areas, and use a lot of movement in your decoys - wigeon love active water.

What I like about gadwall is they're excellent on the table - mild, tender meat that rivals mallard. They're also surprisingly vocal with their own unique calls. These birds are cautious and will circle your spread multiple times before committing. My best success comes from hunting them in smaller potholes and marsh edges where they feel secure, using a mixed spread with mallard and teal decoys.

What sets redheads apart is their striking appearance - the drake's bright red head and black chest make them a prize for any duck strap.
