Trolling Techniques & Gear
Trolling for Kings and other pelagic species is all about covering water efficiently while presenting the right baits at the right speed. We're running a spread of proven producers - ballyhoo, cigar minnows, and artificial lures that have been putting fish in the boat season after season. The heavy tackle setup lets you handle the bigger fish we're targeting without getting spooled when a King makes its first screaming run. The boat's electronics help us locate bait schools, structure, and temperature breaks where the fish are most likely to be feeding. We'll be working depths from 60 to 120 feet, focusing on the areas around artificial reefs, natural bottom structure, and wreck sites that hold concentrations of baitfish. The trolling spread typically includes both surface baits and deeper presentations to cover the entire water column where these fish are feeding.

Species You'll Want to Hook
King Mackerel are the bread and butter of summer trolling in the Gulf, and Panama City Beach sits right in the middle of their migration route. These fish are built for speed, with razor-sharp teeth and an attitude to match. Kings typically range from 15 to 40 pounds in these waters, with the occasional monster pushing 50 pounds or more. They're most active during the early morning hours when baitfish are concentrated near the surface. What makes Kings so exciting to catch is their initial run - when you hook a good one, it's going to peel line off your reel like you wouldn't believe. They're also excellent table fare when prepared fresh, making them a favorite target for both sport and food value.
Wahoo Fish are the speed demons of the Gulf, capable of reaching speeds over 60 mph when they decide to make a run. These sleek predators are built like torpedoes and hit trolled baits with incredible force. Wahoo typically show up in the 20 to 50-pound range around Panama City Beach, and they're known for their acrobatic fights and blistering runs. They prefer the deeper waters along drop-offs and structure, making the wreck sites perfect hunting grounds. The meat is white, flaky, and considered some of the best eating in the Gulf. Wahoo can be tricky to target specifically, but when trolling for Kings, you're always in Wahoo territory.
Pacific Bonito, or Little Tunny as they're known locally, are smaller but incredibly aggressive fighters that provide non-stop action when they're schooled up. These fish typically run 3 to 8 pounds and are perfect for getting kids or novice anglers excited about offshore fishing. They hit fast-moving lures with abandon and fight way above their weight class. During peak summer months, you might encounter massive schools of Bonito that will keep your rods bent for hours. While they're not the best eating compared to other species, they're fantastic fun on light tackle and make excellent bait for larger predators.
Red Snapper are the crown jewel of Gulf fishing, and while trolling isn't the primary method for targeting them, you'll often pick up quality fish when working around the wreck sites and reefs. These deep-bodied fighters are known for their bulldogging style and their excellent table fare. Red Snapper can live for decades and grow to impressive sizes, with fish over 20 pounds not uncommon in deeper waters. They're structure-oriented fish that relate to hard bottom, artificial reefs, and wreck sites where they feed on smaller fish and crustaceans.
Gag Grouper are another structure-loving species that you'll encounter while trolling around the reefs and wrecks. These fish are masters of using structure to their advantage, diving straight down when hooked and trying to cut your line on whatever sharp edge they can find. Gags typically range from 5 to 25 pounds in these waters and are considered some of the best eating fish in the Gulf. They're ambush predators that sit in the shadows of structure waiting for baitfish to swim by, making them perfect
