Fort Walton Beach Fishing Charters
Looking for a solid day on the water without breaking the bank? Our 4-hour trips with Sons Up Charters hit that sweet spot between getting serious fishing time and keeping your schedule flexible. Whether you're an early bird who loves the morning bite or prefer the afternoon action when the fish get active again, we've got you covered. Fort Walton Beach sits right in the heart of some of the Gulf's best fishing grounds, and our crew knows exactly where to put you on the fish. We keep groups small at just 4 anglers max, so you're not fighting for rod space or waiting forever for your turn to reel in that trophy catch.
What to Expect on the Water
Your captain and crew live and breathe these waters year-round, tracking seasonal movements and keeping tabs on where the bite is hottest. We'll head out to productive spots anywhere from 15 to 30 miles offshore, depending on what's running and weather conditions. The Gulf of Mexico around Fort Walton Beach offers incredible structure - natural reefs, artificial wrecks, and drop-offs that hold serious fish. You'll spend your time working these prime zones, not burning daylight running around looking for action. Our boats are rigged with quality fish finders and GPS, so we can get you over productive bottom fast. The atmosphere is laid-back but focused - we're here to put fish in the boat while making sure everyone has a great time doing it.
Trolling and Bottom Tactics
We fish smart out there, switching techniques based on what we're targeting and where we find them. For pelagics like mahi mahi, wahoo, and cobia, we'll troll ballyhoo, cedar plugs, and diving lures along current lines and weed edges. When we mark fish on the sonar, we'll stop and work them with live or cut bait. Bottom fishing is a totally different game - we'll anchor up over structure and drop down with circle hooks, knocker rigs, and whatever the fish are wanting that day. All your tackle is included, from 20-pound spinning setups to heavier conventional gear when we need to muscle fish up from deep water. Our crew handles all the rigging, baiting, and net work, so you can focus on feeling those bites and fighting fish. We bring a mix of live bait, frozen ballyhoo, squid, and cut bait to match whatever feeding mood the fish are in.
Top Catches This Season
Mahi Mahi: These fish are pure gold when they show up in our waters, usually from late spring through early fall. Mahi school up under floating debris, weed lines, and around current breaks 20-40 miles offshore. They hit trolled baits hard and put on an aerial show that'll get your heart pumping. A good mahi runs 15-30 pounds, though we see plenty of smaller schoolies and occasional bulls pushing 40-50 pounds. What makes them special is their willingness to bite and their incredible colors - that electric blue and green is something you never get tired of seeing.
Greater Amberjack: The reef donkeys of the Gulf, these bruisers live around wrecks and hard bottom in 80-200 feet of water. Amberjack are available year-round but fish best in cooler months when they're more aggressive. They'll slam a jig or live bait and immediately head for the bottom, testing your drag and your back muscles. A typical amberjack runs 25-50 pounds, but we regularly see fish over 60 pounds that'll give you a workout you won't forget. They're not the prettiest fish, but they make up for it with pure pulling power.
Wahoo: The speed demons of the offshore world, wahoo are built for one thing - going fast. They patrol the blue water from late fall through early spring, hitting trolled baits at 30-40 mph and screaming line off your reel. Most wahoo we catch run 20-40 pounds, though the occasional monster pushes 60-plus pounds. They've got razor-sharp teeth and lightning reflexes, making them one of the most challenging fish to land consistently. When you hook a good wahoo, hold on tight because the first run will test everything you've got.
Cobia: These brown sharks (they're actually not sharks at all) cruise around structures, following rays and sharks looking for an easy meal. Cobia season runs from March through September, with the best action during their spring and fall migrations. They're curious fish that will often swim right up to the boat, giving you sight-fishing opportunities you don't get with many species. A good cobia goes 25-50 pounds and fights with steady, powerful runs rather than jumping around. They're also excellent table fare, with firm white meat that tastes incredible fresh off the water.
Red Snapper: The crown jewel of Gulf bottom fishing, red snapper live around reefs and wrecks in 60-300 feet of water. During open seasons (usually summer months), these fish provide some of the most consistent action you'll find anywhere. They're smart, structure-oriented fish that require good technique and sharp hooks to land consistently. Most reds run 15-25 pounds, though we see plenty of smaller keeper fish and occasional monsters pushing 30-40 pounds. Their bright red color and excellent eating quality make them a favorite target for both novice and experienced anglers.
