What to Expect on the Water
The Southern Comfort IV isn't your average charter boat – she's built for serious fishing with plenty of room for up to 10 anglers to spread out and work the water properly. We'll head out from Boynton Beach and make our way to the productive waters where the fish stack up, whether that's working the reef line for grouper and snapper or hitting the blue water for mahi and wahoo. Your captain knows these waters like the back of his hand, and he's not afraid to run and gun until we find the bite. The boat's equipped with everything you need – top-shelf tackle, fresh bait, and all the gear to handle whatever decides to eat. You just need to show up ready to fish and maybe bring some snacks and drinks since we don't provide meals on board.
Trolling and Drift Techniques
We fish two main ways out here, and both are proven fish-catchers in these waters. When we're trolling, we'll pull a spread of baits and lures at different depths and distances, covering water efficiently while targeting pelagics like mahi, wahoo, and blackfin tuna. The captain will adjust our speed and direction based on current conditions, water color, and where he's been marking fish. When the bite calls for it, we'll switch to drift fishing, especially when we're working structure for grouper or when the snapper are schooled up tight. Drift fishing lets us get baits down deep and keep them in the strike zone longer, perfect for bottom dwellers that want their meal served just right. We use circle hooks for most applications – they're better for the fish and better for hookups. The crew will handle all the rigging and re-baiting, so you can focus on feeling for that bite and setting the hook when it's time.
Species You'll Want to Hook
Mahi mahi are hands down one of the most exciting fish you'll tangle with out here. These common dolphinfish are pure dynamite when hooked, jumping clear out of the water and putting on a show that'll get everyone on the boat fired up. They love floating debris, weed lines, and current breaks, and when you find a school, you can often pick away at them for a while. Peak season runs from late spring through early fall, but we see mahi year-round in South Florida. They're also some of the best eating fish in the ocean, with firm white meat that's perfect on the grill.
Wahoo are the speed demons of the deep, capable of making blistering runs that'll test your drag and your reflexes. These fish patrol the blue water and love fast-moving baits, which makes them perfect targets when we're trolling. They've got razor-sharp teeth and can cut through leaders like butter, so we fish heavy wire when we're targeting them specifically. Winter months are prime time for wahoo around here, when the water cools down just enough to get them really active. Their meat is excellent – lean, white, and mild-flavored.
Mutton snapper are one of the smartest fish on the reef, and landing a nice one takes some skill and patience. These guys are structure-oriented and can be found around wrecks, ledges, and hard bottom throughout the year. They're notorious for their light bites and their ability to wrap you up in the structure before you know what hit you. Spring and summer bring the best mutton fishing, especially when we're drift fishing live bait over their favorite hangouts. They're also one of the premier table fish in Florida waters.
Gag grouper are the bulldogs of the reef, using their powerful bodies and intimate knowledge of the bottom structure to try and cut you off before you can get them up. These fish are ambush predators that hide in holes and under ledges, waiting for an easy meal to swim by. We typically target them with live or dead bait on the bottom, and when one eats, you've got to put the screws to them immediately. Gag season runs through most of the year with some seasonal closures, and they're absolute table fare champions with their flaky white meat.
Blackfin tuna might be the smallest tuna species we target, but they make up for size with numbers and fight. These fish school up in good numbers and can provide non-stop action when conditions are right. They love trolled baits and small lures, and they're often found around temperature breaks and current edges. Blackfins are available year-round but really shine in the cooler months. They're excellent for sashimi and make great bait for bigger fish when cut up properly.
