Half Day Morning Scallop Charter For 5 To 6 Person
Florida's Nature Coast transforms into a scalloper's paradise every summer, and there's no better way to experience it than with Captain Judge Wilkes aboard our comfortable 26-foot tritoon. This isn't your typical crowded charter boat experience – we keep things intimate with just 6 guests max, so you'll have plenty of elbow room and personal attention from our crew. The crystal-clear waters along the Nature Coast offer some of the best scalloping grounds in Florida, and our morning departure gives you the perfect window to beat the afternoon crowds while the water's still calm and visibility is at its peak.
What to Expect on the Water
Your 4-hour adventure kicks off bright and early, giving you the best conditions of the day. We'll cruise out to the prime scalloping beds where the grass flats come alive with these tasty little mollusks. The tritoon's spacious deck means everyone can gear up comfortably, and that full bimini top keeps you shaded between dives. Captain Judge knows these waters like the back of his hand – he's been working these flats for years and can read the conditions to put you right where the scallops are hiding. The water depth typically runs 3-8 feet, perfect for snorkeling without feeling like you're in over your head. Between July 1st and September 24th, these beds are absolutely loaded, but the season flies by faster than you'd expect.
Gear Setup & Techniques
We've got you covered from mask to mesh bag – all snorkeling gear, licenses, and scalloping equipment comes with your trip. The technique is pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. You'll be snorkeling along the grass beds, looking for those telltale blue eyes peeking out from the seagrass. Scallops can't actually swim away like fish, but they'll clamp shut and try to burrow deeper when they spot you coming. The trick is moving slowly and checking every nook in the grass – they love hiding in the thicker patches. Our crew will show you exactly what to look for and the proper way to harvest them. The mesh bags we provide give the scallops room to breathe while keeping your catch secure. Water temperature stays comfortable in the mid-80s during season, so you won't need any wetsuit gear.
Target Species
Bay scallops are the stars of this show, and they're unlike anything else you'll encounter in Florida waters. These little guys are surprisingly active – they can actually "swim" by rapidly opening and closing their shells, creating a jet propulsion effect that's pretty cool to watch underwater. What makes them really special is those bright blue eyes – up to 200 tiny eyes along the edge of their shell that can detect shadows and movement. They're typically about the size of a silver dollar when fully grown, and the sweet, tender meat inside is what keeps people coming back year after year. Peak season runs from mid-July through early September when they're at their largest size. The Nature Coast populations are healthy and well-managed, which means consistent action throughout the season. What guests love most is how different this is from regular fishing – you're actively hunting underwater, using your eyes and hands instead of rods and reels. Plus, the eating is fantastic – fresh scallops that same evening beat anything you'll find in a restaurant.
Time to Book Your Spot
Scallop season is short and sweet, running just under three months, so spots fill up fast once word gets out about how good the beds are looking. This morning charter gives you the best shot at calm seas and clear water before the afternoon winds pick up. With Captain Judge's local knowledge and our comfortable setup, you're looking at a top-rated experience that combines adventure with a great meal at the end of the day. Everything's included – gear, licenses, ice, water, and even photos to prove your underwater hunting skills to the folks back home. Whether you're a seasoned scalloper or trying it for the first time, this is the kind of trip that'll have you marking next year's calendar before this season even ends.
