Crystal River Full Day Scallop & Fishing Combo
Picture this: you're out on the Nature Coast waters with Captain Andrew, and you can't decide whether you want to dive for scallops or throw lines for redfish. Good news – you don't have to choose! This 8-hour combo trip lets you experience the best of both worlds during Crystal River's prime season from July through September. We're talking about a full day where you'll get your hands dirty (and wet) collecting scallops in crystal-clear springs, then switch gears to target some of Florida's most sought-after inshore species.
What to Expect on the Water
This isn't your typical half-day fishing charter – we're going all-out for eight solid hours on Crystal River's productive waters. You'll start the day fresh, and Captain Andrew will read the conditions to decide whether to hit the scallop beds first or wet some lines. The beauty of this combo trip is the flexibility. If the scallops are being stubborn in their beds, we pivot to fishing structure and grass flats where the reds and trout hang out. When you're ready for a change of pace, we'll move to the shallow scallop grounds where you can snorkel and hand-pick these tasty bivalves. The boat stays stocked with everything you need – licensing, bait, tackle, ice, and water. Just grab your sunscreen and whatever snacks keep you going strong all day.
Techniques & Crystal River Waters
Crystal River's inshore waters offer some of the most diverse fishing opportunities on Florida's west coast. We're working everything from shallow grass flats to deeper channel edges, using live bait and artificials depending on what the fish want. You'll learn to sight-fish for redfish cruising the flats, work topwater plugs over submerged vegetation, and drift live shrimp along drop-offs where the trout stack up. For scalloping, we'll anchor up in 3-8 feet of crystal-clear water where you can easily spot these fan-shaped shellfish nestled in the grass beds. The in-water guide knows exactly where to look and will help you reach your limit. The spring-fed waters stay cool even in summer heat, making the snorkeling comfortable while you search for scallops hiding in the turtle grass.
Customer Stories
"Because Capt Andrew is so knowledgeable about the area when this Augusts scalloping didn't prove real productive we were able to shift to catching a limit of red fish and swimming the springs with the manatees. We will be back next summer" - Robert
Species You'll Want to Hook
Redfish are the crown jewel of Crystal River's inshore scene, and for good reason. These copper-colored bruisers cruise the shallow flats in schools during summer months, often with their backs barely covered by water. A typical Crystal River red runs 18-27 inches, perfect slot-size fish that fight like they're twice their size. What makes them special here is how clear the water is – you'll actually see them coming before you cast. They're most active during moving tides, especially early morning and late afternoon. The rush of watching a red track your bait in gin-clear water, then explode on it, never gets old.
Spotted seatrout love Crystal River's grass beds and hang around all summer long. These beautiful fish with distinctive black spots average 14-20 inches in our waters, with some real gator trout pushing 24+ inches. They're ambush predators that hide in the grass waiting for bait fish, making them perfect targets for live shrimp or soft plastic jigs. Trout bite best during dawn and dusk periods, but the deep holes near spring mouths hold fish all day. What's cool about trout fishing here is the variety – you might catch a dozen keeper-size fish, then hook into a monster that peels drag like a small tarpon.
While not technically a fish species, bay scallops are the star attraction from July through September. These filter-feeding mollusks cluster in shallow grass beds throughout Crystal River's spring-fed bays. Adult scallops average 3-4 inches across and can actually swim by clapping their shells together – it's wild to see underwater. Peak season runs August through early September when scallops reach full size and concentrate in predictable areas. Each person can harvest up to 2 gallons of whole scallops (10 gallons shucked), and the sweet meat rivals any expensive restaurant. Finding them becomes addictive – they blend perfectly with their surroundings until you train your eye to spot the telltale shell outline.
