Spring migration from April to June is prime time when they move through our area heading north. What makes them special is their incredible table fare - firm, white meat that rivals any fish in the Gulf. They're aggressive predators and put up a strong, determined fight. You'll often spot them just under the surface, which makes for exciting sight fishing. The key to success is being ready when you see one - they don't stick around long. I always keep a bucktail jig rigged and ready. Color doesn't matter much, but that 4-6 ounce jig weight is crucial for getting down to them quickly. Once hooked, they'll make powerful runs.
Menticirrhus SaxatilisNorthern kingfish might be small, but they're scrappy fighters that punch above their weight class. These bronze-colored members of the drum family average 10-14 inches and 1-2 pounds, but they'll bend your rod and test your drag. We target them in sandy bottoms and around structure in 15-40 feet of water. Late summer is prime time when they move closer to shore. Scomberomorus MaculatusSpanish mackerel are speed demons that'll give you a workout - these silver bullets average 2-4 pounds but make up for size with pure speed and aggressive strikes. We find them in schools near the surface around structure and bait pods in 15-50 feet. They're here spring through fall, with peak action in summer when water temps hit the 70s. What makes them great targets is their willingness to bite and the fast-paced action - when you find a school, it's game on. The meat is excellent too - mild flavor that grills up perfect. They're also one of the best baits for bigger fish like king mackerel and sharks. My advice: use light tackle with 12-20 pound braid and small shiny spoons or jigs. When you hook one, get it in quick because the rest of the school will follow - that's your chance to load the boat. Drift through the area rather than motoring to avoid spooking them.
Lobotes SurinamensisTripletail are one of our most unique catches - they look like floating leaves until you get close. These chunky fish average 10-20 pounds and have this cool ability to change color and float on their sides to blend in with debris. We find them around weed lines, floating structure, and sometimes just drifting near the surface in 10-40 feet. Summer months from June through September are peak season here in the Gulf. What guests love is the challenge - they're extremely spookable and require stealth to approach. Once hooked, they're surprisingly acrobatic for such a thick-bodied fish. The meat is outstanding too, similar to snapper with firm, sweet flesh. My trick is to cast well past them and slowly work your bait back - let them ambush it rather than dropping it right on their head. Live shrimp works great, but watch those razor-sharp gills when handling them.
