Steelhead and Salmon Fishing Port Alberni
Port Alberni sits right in the sweet spot where some of BC's most productive salmon and steelhead waters converge. This 8-hour river fishing adventure puts you in the heart of it all, working the legendary Skeena and Kitimat systems from May through October when the runs are at their peak. At CAD$750 for two anglers, you're getting access to world-class fishing grounds that locals have been keeping busy for generations. Our experienced guides know every pool, every drift, and exactly where these fish like to hold depending on water levels and time of season.
What to Expect on the Water
This isn't your typical dock fishing setup. We're talking about a full day working prime river stretches where steelhead and salmon move through on their spawning migrations. You'll be up early, hitting the water when the light's just starting to break and the fish are most active. The Skeena and Kitimat systems offer incredible variety - from deep pools where big chinooks sulk to faster runs where coho love to ambush prey. Your guide will read the water conditions daily and adjust the game plan accordingly. Some days we're drift fishing with roe, other times we're swinging spoons through likely holding spots. The beauty of an 8-hour trip is having time to really work different techniques and locations until we find what's firing the fish up.
Techniques and Tackle
River fishing for salmon and steelhead is all about presentation and knowing how to work the current. We'll have you set up with medium-heavy spinning gear or conventional setups depending on conditions and your comfort level. Float fishing with fresh roe or cured eggs is deadly effective, especially for steelhead that are holding in deeper pools. When the coho are running aggressive, we'll switch to casting spoons and spinners, letting them swing through the current where fish are staged. For the big chinooks, it's often about getting down to the bottom with weight and working bait slowly through their travel lanes. Your guide will handle all the rigging and teach you how to read your line for those subtle steelhead takes that feel more like a gentle tug than the aggressive strikes you might expect.
Species You'll Want to Hook
Coho salmon are the acrobats of the bunch, typically running 8-15 pounds and absolutely explosive when hooked. They show up in good numbers from July through September, and these fish love to jump - sometimes clearing the water multiple times during a fight. Coho are aggressive feeders, making them perfect targets for spinning lures and spoons. When one grabs your offering, you'll know it immediately.
Steelhead trout are the holy grail for many river anglers, and for good reason. These sea-run rainbows can push 20+ pounds and fight with an intensity that's hard to match. They're incredibly smart and spooky, which makes hooking one feel like a real achievement. Peak steelhead fishing runs from September into October when the fall runs are moving through. These fish require patience and finesse - they'll often mouth the bait softly before committing, so staying connected to your line is crucial.
Chinook salmon are the heavyweights, with mature fish regularly hitting 30+ pounds in these systems. Spring chinooks start showing in May and June, followed by fall runs later in the season. These fish are powerful but tend to fight deep rather than jumping like coho. Landing a big chinook on river gear is a serious test of your drag system and patience. They're notorious for long, bulldogging runs that can take you well into your backing.
Sockeye salmon might be smaller at 5-8 pounds, but they make up for it in sheer numbers and determination. When the sockeye runs are peaking in mid-summer, the rivers can be absolutely thick with fish. They're challenging to hook since they're not actively feeding, but when you connect with one, they fight with surprising strength for their size. Sockeye are also some of the best eating salmon you'll find.
