Our crew knows these coastal waters like the back of their hand, and we'll get you hooked up with some of the best eating fish you'll find anywhere. Whether you're a seasoned angler or just getting your feet wet, this trip delivers the goods without eating up your whole day.
What to Expect on the Water
When you step aboard with Western Star, you're in for a proper San Diego fishing experience. We launch early to beat the crowds and hit the prime spots while the fish are still feeding. The boat's rigged with quality tackle and we've got everything you need – rods, reels, bait, and tackle are all included. Our captain will position us over kelp beds, rocky structure, and current breaks where the Calico Bass, Barracuda, and Yellowtail like to hang out. The vibe is relaxed but focused – we're here to fish, and our crew will keep you in the action. Don't worry about bringing lunch since we're only out for half the day, but definitely pack some water and snacks to keep your energy up. The coastal waters around San Diego offer some of the most consistent fishing on the West Coast, and with our small group size, you'll get hands-on coaching if you need it.
Techniques and Tackle
We fish these inshore waters using a mix of techniques that match what the fish are doing. Live bait fishing is our bread and butter – we'll start with sardines and anchovies to get the Calicos and Yellowtail fired up. When the Barracuda are around, we'll switch to iron jigs and work them fast through the water column. The crew will show you how to read your sonar, spot diving birds, and recognize the signs that fish are in the area. We use medium to heavy spinning gear for most species, with 20-30 pound test line to handle the bigger Yellowtail when they show up. If you've got your own tackle and want to bring it, that's cool too – just make sure it's spooled with fresh line. The kelp beds can be tricky, so we'll teach you how to work your bait around the structure without getting hung up. Bottom fishing with dropper loops works great for the Calicos, while the Yellowtail prefer live bait suspended in the mid-water column.
Top Catches This Season
The Barracuda have been absolutely on fire this year, with fish running 24-30 inches and putting up a serious fight on light tackle. These silver rockets love to hit fast-moving jigs and will test your drag system when they make their runs. Mahi Mahi have been showing up closer to shore than usual, bringing those electric colors and acrobatic jumps that make every angler smile. The Yellowfin Tuna action has been world-class, with fish in the 15-40 pound range cruising the kelp edges and feeding aggressively on bait schools. Pacific Bonito are perfect for anglers who want constant action – they school up thick and will hit just about anything you throw at them. When we connect with Swordfish during our trips, it's always a customer favorite experience since these deep-water gladiators don't come shallow very often. The variety keeps everyone on their toes, and you never know what's going to grab your bait next.
Species You'll Want to Hook
Barracuda are the speed demons of the kelp beds, growing up to 4 feet long and hitting baits with lightning-fast strikes. They're most active during the warmer months from late spring through fall, and they'll absolutely destroy a properly presented sardine or fast-retrieved jig. What makes them so exciting is their explosive power – they'll strip line off your reel faster than you can believe. The meat is fantastic when prepared right, with a firm texture that's perfect for grilling.
Mahi Mahi bring the color and the show, with their brilliant gold and green sides flashing as they jump and tail-walk across the surface. These fish are pure entertainment, growing quickly and reaching 20-50 pounds in our local waters. They're most common during the summer and early fall when water temperatures climb, and they love to hang around floating kelp paddies and debris. The sweet, flaky meat is considered some of the best eating in the ocean.
Yellowfin Tuna are the ultimate prize fish – fast, powerful, and absolutely delicious. Local Yellowfin typically run 15-60 pounds and are renowned for their sustained runs and bulldogging fights. They're most active during the warmer months and early morning hours when they push baitfish to the surface. Landing one of these fish is a real accomplishment, and the sashimi-grade meat is worth every bit of effort.
Pacific Bonito might be smaller than their tuna cousins, but they make up for it with sheer numbers and non-stop action. These 3-8 pound fish school up in huge numbers and provide bent rods for the entire group. They're perfect for beginners since they're aggressive biters, and the smoked meat is a local delicacy that many anglers prefer over more expensive fish.
Swordfish encounters are rare but legendary when they happen. These deep-water warriors occasionally come shallow during our inshore trips, usually during the warmer months. At 50-200 pounds, they're absolute tanks that will test your tackle and your endurance. The firm, steak-like meat is prized by restaurants and home cooks alike.
