Swordfish Mania: Extended Full Day Trip
Want to test yourself against one of the ocean's ultimate predators? Our 10-hour Swordfish Mania trip off Pompano Beach puts you face-to-face with broadbills and a killer lineup of pelagic species. This isn't your typical half-day charter – we're talking serious offshore action where the water runs deep blue and the fish fight like their lives depend on it. With room for up to 6 anglers, you'll have plenty of space to work without bumping elbows, plus our crew knows exactly where these fish hang out and how to put you on them.
What to Expect on the Water
We're leaving the dock early and staying late, giving you maximum time in the prime zones where swordfish cruise. The Gulf Stream's edge is our playground, and that's where the magic happens. Our captain has been working these waters for years and knows the drop-offs, temperature breaks, and structure that hold fish. You'll be fishing in 800 to 1,500 feet of water, where the bottom drops away and the big pelagics roam. The boat comes equipped with everything you need – heavy tackle, circle hooks, squid, and the electronics to find fish in the deep. Don't worry about bringing anything except sunscreen, snacks, and drinks. We've got the serious gear covered, including the fighting belts and harnesses you'll definitely want when a sword decides to make a run.
Tactics for the Deep Blue
Swordfishing is all about patience and precision. We'll be drift fishing with heavy weights to get baits down in the strike zone, usually 100 to 300 feet below the surface during daylight hours. The key is keeping fresh squid and ballyhoo down there where these fish feed. Our crew will rig your baits with circle hooks and set up the lines at different depths to cover the water column. When a sword picks up your bait, you'll know it – the rod tip starts bouncing, then loads up heavy. These fish are famous for long, powerful runs that can strip hundreds of yards of line off your reel. We use 50 to 80-pound tackle with high-capacity reels because you never know how big the next fish might be. Between sword drops, we'll troll for the other speedsters that cruise these same waters – mahi, wahoo, and kingfish that'll bend your rod and put up their own spectacular fights.
Top Catches This Season
Swordfish: The star of the show, these broadbills are pure muscle and attitude. Most fish we see range from 40 to 150 pounds, though giants over 200 pounds do show up. Peak season runs from October through March when cooler water temperatures bring them closer to the surface during daylight hours. What makes swordfish so special is their fighting style – long, sustained runs followed by bulldogging deep dives that'll test your stamina and technique. Their distinctive bill and massive dorsal fin make them one of the most recognizable catches in offshore fishing.
Blackfin Tuna: These smaller cousins of the yellowfin are pure speed and energy. Running 10 to 25 pounds on average, blackfins school up around structure and temperature breaks. They hit trolled baits hard and fast, often jumping multiple times during the fight. What anglers love about blackfins is their willingness to bite and their excellent table fare – the meat is dark red and perfect for sushi or searing.
King Mackerel: Smoker kings are always a crowd favorite, especially the big females that can push 40 to 60 pounds. They're most active from April through October, though we catch them year-round in South Florida waters. Kings are ambush predators that crush trolled baits and make blistering runs. Their razor-sharp teeth mean you need wire leaders, and their aggressive strikes often result in spectacular jumps and head-shaking displays.
Mahi Mahi: Also called dolphinfish, these colorful fighters are offshore legends. Bulls can reach 30 to 50 pounds and put on an aerial show that'll have you reaching for your camera. Mahi are most common from May through September, often found around floating debris, weed lines, or drop-offs. They travel in schools, so where you find one, there are usually more. Their brilliant gold, green, and blue colors make them one of the most beautiful fish in the ocean.
Wahoo: The speed demons of the offshore world, wahoo are built like torpedoes and hit trolled baits at 40+ mph. These fish can reach 60 to 80 pounds and are famous for long, screaming runs that'll have your drag singing. They're more common during cooler months and prefer deeper water along drop-offs. Wahoo have excellent white meat that's perfect on the grill, making them a favorite among anglers who like to eat their catch.
