Full Day Guided Fishing Trip In Destin, Florida
Looking for a serious day of offshore fishing in the Emerald Coast? This full-day charter with Windwalker II Charters puts you right in the heart of some of the Gulf's most productive fishing grounds. Captain Bernie knows these waters like the back of his hand and will take you to spots where cobia, red snapper, king mackerel, and even marlin are waiting. Whether you're bringing the family for their first taste of deep sea fishing or you're a seasoned angler looking to add some quality fish to your cooler, this trip delivers. We're talking about 8-10 hours on the water with all gear, bait, and licenses included – just show up ready to fish.
What to Expect on the Water
Your day starts early at the Destin Harbor, where you'll meet Captain Bernie and get familiar with the Windwalker II. This isn't some stripped-down fishing boat – she's fully rigged with quality tackle, electronics, and everything needed for a productive day offshore. Once we clear the pass, it's about a 30-45 minute run to reach the prime fishing zones where the real action happens. The extended time on the water means we can hit multiple spots depending on what's biting. If the bottom fishing is slow, we'll switch to trolling. If the trolling bite is off, we'll head to different structure. That flexibility is what separates a full-day trip from those quick half-day runs where you're stuck with whatever's happening at one spot.
Techniques and Tackle
We'll be running a mix of techniques depending on what species we're targeting and what the conditions look like. For the bottom dwellers like red snapper and gag grouper, we're talking about heavy tackle with circle hooks and live or cut bait dropped down to structure in 60-120 feet of water. When we're after pelagics like cobia, king mackerel, or mahi, we'll switch to trolling spread with diving plugs, ballyhoo rigs, and maybe some live bait if we can catch it fresh. The boat carries spinning reels, conventional reels, and everything in between – all spooled with fresh line and ready to handle whatever we hook into. Captain Bernie will match your tackle to your experience level, so don't worry if you've never used a conventional reel before.

Species You'll Want to Hook
Red Snapper are the bread and butter of Gulf fishing, and for good reason. These bright red fighters live around structure in 40-200 feet of water and put up a solid fight once hooked. Best fishing is typically during snapper season (varies by regulations), and they're aggressive feeders that'll hit cut bait, live pinfish, or squid. What makes them special is the combination of great fight and excellent table fare – there's a reason they're called the most popular fish in the Gulf.
Cobia are the inshore giants that can show up anywhere from 20 to 200 feet of water, especially around floating debris, buoys, or even following rays and sharks. These brown torpedoes can push 40-50 pounds and are known for their powerful runs and stubborn fights. Peak season runs from March through September, with the bigger fish showing up during the spring migration. They're curious fish that will often follow the boat, giving you multiple shot opportunities.
King Mackerel are pure speed demons that patrol the offshore waters looking for schools of baitfish. These silver bullets can hit 40+ mph and make screaming runs that'll test your drag system. Spring and fall are prime time when they're migrating along the coast, but summer fishing can be excellent too. They're perfect for trolling with live bait or high-speed lures, and there's nothing quite like the initial strike of a big king.
Gag Grouper are the heavyweights of the bottom fishing world, and they know how to use structure to their advantage. These smart fish will try to cut you off on rocks, ledges, or artificial reefs the second they feel the hook. They're most active in cooler months and can reach impressive sizes – a 20-30 pound gag is a legitimate trophy. The key is getting them up and away from structure quickly, which is why we use heavy tackle and tight drags.
Spanish Mackerel might be smaller than their king cousins, but they make up for it with numbers and attitude. These schooling fish are perfect for lighter tackle and can provide non-stop action when you find them. They're year-round residents in Destin waters and great for getting kids or new anglers their first taste of success. They hit small jigs, spoons, or pieces of cut bait with aggressive strikes.
Greater Amberjack are the bulldogs of the deep, using their broad shoulders and powerful bodies to test every component of your tackle. These fish live around deep structure and wrecks, often in 100+ feet of water. They're available year-round but fishing is typically best in fall and winter. A big amberjack will make multiple deep runs and can easily spool you if your drag isn't set properly. They're also excellent table fare when prepared correctly.
Grey Snapper, also known as mangrove snapper, are the smart guys of the snapper family. They're extremely line-shy and bait-conscious, which makes them a fun challenge for experienced anglers. These fish are available year
