Full Day Rockfish & Lingcod Charter
There's nothing quite like getting out on the water early and spending a full day targeting the coastal rockfish and lingcod that make San Francisco Bay area fishing legendary. This private charter gives your group of up to 6 anglers the chance to fill your coolers with some of the tastiest fish swimming in these waters. We're talking about a generous limit of 10 rockfish and 2 lingcod per person – that's serious fish box potential right there. The 8-hour window from 6:30 AM to 2:30 PM gives us plenty of time to hit multiple spots and really dial in what the fish are wanting that day.
What to Expect on the Water
This is your boat for the day, which means we fish at your pace and target what you want to catch. The coastal waters we'll be working hold some of the most consistent rockfish populations you'll find anywhere, plus lingcod that'll test your drag and give you stories to tell back at the dock. We'll start early to beat the crowds and get on the productive spots while the fish are still actively feeding. The beauty of a private charter is flexibility – if the rockfish are going crazy at one reef, we can stay put. If the lingcod bite is hot somewhere else, we move. Your trip can even start earlier or later if that works better for your crew, just let us know when you book.
Gear Setup & Techniques
Everything's provided, so you can leave the tackle shop stress at home. We've got quality rods and reels spooled with the right line weights for both rockfish and lingcod. Bait selection changes with conditions and what the fish are preferring, but we always have what's working loaded and ready. Bottom fishing is the name of the game here – we'll be working structure, reefs, and rocky areas where these species love to hang out. The rockfish typically respond well to smaller baits fished near the bottom, while lingcod prefer bigger presentations that trigger their predatory instincts. We'll walk you through the techniques as we fish, and both beginners and experienced anglers always pick up something new on these trips.
Target Species You'll Hook
Black rockfish are probably the most cooperative of the bunch and a customer favorite for good reason. These fish school up in good numbers and once you find them, the action can be steady. They're excellent table fare with firm white meat that works great grilled, baked, or in fish tacos. Black rockfish typically run 2-4 pounds in these waters, with the occasional larger fish pushing 6-7 pounds. They're active year-round but really turn on during the cooler months when baitfish schools are thick.
Brown rockfish, also called brown bombers by the locals, are stockier fish that put up a solid fight for their size. They tend to hug tight to structure and can be a bit more finicky about bait presentation, but when you dial them in, they're worth the effort. Browns average 3-5 pounds and have excellent eating qualities. They're most active during daylight hours and respond well to fresh bait worked slowly along the bottom.
Canary rockfish are the pretty ones in the family with their bright yellow and orange coloration. They're also some of the best eating rockfish you'll find, with sweet, flaky meat that's perfect for any preparation. Canaries typically suspend a bit higher in the water column than other rockfish species, so we'll adjust our technique accordingly. These fish have made a great comeback in recent years and are now a regular part of quality rockfish trips.
Blue rockfish are the acrobats of the group and will often come up fighting all the way to the boat. They school heavily and when you get into them, the action can be non-stop. Blues are smaller on average, usually 1-3 pounds, but they make up for size with numbers and attitude. They're particularly active during the warmer months and often feed aggressively in the morning and evening hours.
Lingcod are the apex predator we're after and the fish that'll give you the biggest adrenaline rush of the day. These aggressive bottom dwellers can reach impressive sizes – anything over 15 pounds is a quality fish, and 20-30 pounders show up regularly. Lingcod are ambush predators with huge mouths and an attitude to match. They'll grab a bait and run, testing your drag and your nerve. The meat is firm and white, perfect for grilling or frying, and one good lingcod can feed a family. Peak season runs from late spring through fall when they're most active and feeding heavily.
