4-Hour Nearshore Winter Fishing Special
Winter fishing off Myrtle Beach isn't just about staying warm – it's about tapping into some of the most consistent action you'll find all year. This 4-hour nearshore charter puts you right where the fish are stacked up, just a short ride from the inlet aboard our 26-foot Sea Fox. You're looking at targeting seabass, flounder, and whatever else decides to bite in the cooler months. With flexible departure times, we can work around your schedule whether you want to catch the early morning bite or prefer a more relaxed afternoon on the water. Perfect for families, couples, or that buddy trip you've been putting off.
What to Expect on the Water
We'll head out from the marina and make a quick 15-20 minute run to our nearshore fishing grounds, typically working depths between 40-80 feet where the winter fish like to hold. The Sea Fox handles beautifully in winter conditions, and her spacious cockpit gives all four anglers plenty of room to work without getting tangled up. December through February brings some of the most reliable fishing we see, especially for black sea bass and keeper flounder. The water's clearer, the baitfish are concentrated, and the fish are hungry. You'll be bottom fishing with circle hooks and cut bait most of the time, though we'll mix in some live bait when conditions are right. Don't worry about the cold – winter days on the water can be surprisingly comfortable, and the fish don't seem to mind the cooler temps one bit.
Tackle & Techniques
We keep it simple and effective out there. You'll be fishing with medium-heavy conventional rods paired with 4/0 to 6/0 circle hooks, depending on what we're targeting. Most of the action happens on the bottom using 4-8 ounce sinkers to keep your bait in the strike zone. Squid, cut mullet, and shrimp are our go-to baits, and we'll have everything rigged and ready when you step aboard. The technique is straightforward – drop to the bottom, reel up a turn or two, and wait for that telltale thump. Sea bass hit hard and flounder can be subtle, so we'll coach you through reading the bites. When the fish are really turned on, you might find yourself working a bucktail jig or small soft plastic, especially around structure. All tackle and bait are included, though you're welcome to bring your own gear if you've got favorites.
Target Species
Black sea bass are the stars of the winter show around here. These chunky bottom dwellers love the cooler water and tend to school up tight on hard bottom and artificial reefs. They're aggressive feeders that'll slam squid and cut bait without hesitation. Most of our winter sea bass run between 12-16 inches, with plenty of keepers in the mix. They're fantastic table fare and put up a solid fight for their size. The best part? They're not shy – when you find a school, you can often load the boat before they wise up.
Winter flounder fishing has been consistently good the past few seasons. These flatfish move into nearshore waters during the cooler months, feeding heavily on small crabs and marine worms. They're masters of camouflage and can be tricky to hook since they often mouth the bait before committing. Once you get one to the boat, though, you'll understand why anglers get so excited about doormat flounder. A good winter flounder will go 16-20 inches, and the meat is as good as it gets. They require patience, but the payoff is worth it.
We also pick up plenty of bonus species during winter nearshore trips. Triggerfish, porgies, and the occasional red drum keep things interesting. Winter brings some of the most diverse fishing we see, and you never know what might grab your bait next. The variety keeps everyone engaged, especially when you've got kids or newer anglers aboard who just want to catch fish.
