About Bayou la Chape, LA

Bayou la Chape is a bay found within Louisiana near the town of Woodlake. It is located in the St. Bernard Parish and is measured to be about 11.2 miles away from a city named Poydras. The bay has an elevation of 1 meter and is found close by a few waterbodies, including Reggio Canal, Bayou Juanita, and Grand Lagoon. 

The bay is also nearby a famous landmark called Belle Chasse, a location famous for its abundant wildlife and the ‘Crawfish Fest’ seafood festival. It’s said that the town’s name means "beautiful hunting”, an acknowledgment of the wildlife’s richness by the early French colonists. However, others say that the real origin of the town’s name came from Joseph D. Bellechasse, a colonel who lived in New Orleans at the time. 

One of the most famous water bodies nearby Bayou la Chape is the Grand Lagoon, a lake with a -1-meter elevation and is within walking distance of Howze Beach. The town closest to the bay, Woodlake, is approximately 3 miles away north-west. It’s a well-known ethnic Isleño fishing community founded by direct descendants of the first colonists. The town was founded by hunters, trappers, and fishermen who are now succeeded by local anglers in the area.
