Summer LOC Derby Offshore Fishing Charter
Looking to get in on some serious derby action this summer? Our 6-hour Summer LOC Derby charter is where anglers come to chase prize money and leaderboard spots while targeting some of the Great Lakes' most prized fish. Starting at first light (6:00 AM sharp), you'll have the best part of the day to work the offshore waters for Chinook salmon, lake trout, and whatever else is biting. Running from June 28 through July 27, this seasonal charter puts you right in the sweet spot of summer fishing when these fish are most active. At $600 for up to 4 anglers, you're not just buying a fishing trip – you're investing in a shot at derby glory with some of the most consistent action we see all year.
What to Expect on the Water
This isn't your typical fishing charter – it's a full-on derby competition where every fish could be your ticket to prize money. We'll be working the deeper offshore waters where the big Chinooks and lake trout hang out during the summer months. The 6-hour window gives us plenty of time to cover water, try different depths, and adjust tactics based on what the fish are telling us. You'll be fishing alongside other derby participants, but don't worry – there's plenty of fish to go around, and the competition just makes it more fun. We start early because that's when these fish are most aggressive, especially the Chinooks that like to feed in the cooler morning temperatures. The atmosphere is electric during derby season, with captains sharing intel on the radio and anglers getting genuinely pumped about every hookup. Even if you don't win prize money, the fishing during this period is typically some of the best you'll find all summer.
Trolling Tactics & Setup
We're trolling the whole trip, which is hands-down the most effective way to cover water and find active fish in these offshore zones. We'll be running downriggers to get our presentations down to where the fish are holding – usually anywhere from 40 to 120 feet down, depending on the thermocline and what we're seeing on the electronics. Spoons, plugs, and flasher-fly combos are the go-to baits, with specific colors and sizes varying based on conditions and what the fish have been hitting. Don't worry if you've never worked downriggers before – we'll walk you through everything and handle the technical stuff. Your job is to fight the fish once they're hooked. We'll be watching the fish finder constantly, looking for schools of baitfish and temperature breaks where predators like to hang out. Speed is critical in this game – usually trolling between 2.5 and 3.5 mph depending on what species we're targeting. When a rod goes off, it's all hands on deck to clear lines and get that fish to the boat. The beauty of trolling is that we can cover miles of water in a single trip, dramatically increasing your odds of finding fish and putting you in contention for derby prizes.
Top Catches This Season
Chinook salmon are the absolute stars of this derby, and for good reason – these fish are pure muscle and attitude when they're hooked. We're talking fish that regularly push 15 to 25 pounds, with the occasional monster going over 30. They hit hard, run deep, and will test every bit of your tackle and technique. During the summer derby period, Chinooks are feeding heavily on alewives and other baitfish, making them more aggressive and easier to pattern. What makes catching them so addictive is their unpredictability – they might slam a spoon at 60 feet down in the morning, then switch to hitting plugs at 40 feet by afternoon. The best part about derby Chinooks is that every single one could be a winner, so there's tension and excitement with every fish you bring to the boat.
Lake trout bring a different kind of excitement to the derby mix. These fish are the deep-water specialists, often holding in 80 to 150 feet of water where they cruise for food along structure and temperature breaks. Lakers can live for decades and grow huge – 10 to 20-pound fish are common, with true giants reaching 30-plus pounds. They're incredibly strong fighters that use their weight and the deep water to their advantage, making long, powerful runs that will burn your arms. What's cool about lake trout is their consistency – while Chinooks can be moody, lakers are usually willing to bite if you put the right presentation in front of them. During derby season, they're particularly active as the summer thermocline sets up, concentrating baitfish and making these predators easier to locate and catch.
While not always the main target, walleye can be a welcome surprise during derby fishing, especially when they're suspended in the deeper water chasing baitfish. These fish are prized for their incredible eating quality and their subtle, finicky bite that tests your angling skills. Summer walleyes in offshore waters are typically bigger than their shallow-water cousins, often running 3 to 8 pounds with the occasional whopper pushing double digits. They're smart fish that require a delicate touch and precise presentations, but when you connect with a good one, the steady head-shaking fight is incredibly satisfying. Derby walleyes often bite best during low-light periods, making those early morning hours particularly productive.
