6 Hour Shared Fishing Trip (AM) Orange Beach
Looking for a serious offshore fishing adventure without breaking the bank? This 6-hour shared trip out of Orange Beach puts you right in the action with some of the Gulf's most sought-after pelagic species. We're talking King Mackerel, Wahoo, and Mahi Mahi – the kind of fish that make your drag scream and get your heart pumping. Running from June through August when these species are most active in our waters, this trip combines the best of Alabama's offshore fishing with an affordable shared boat experience that's perfect for both rookie anglers and seasoned veterans.
What to Expect on the Water
Your day starts early – we're talking 6:00 AM departure, so plan accordingly. This isn't a leisurely sunrise cruise; we're heading straight to where the fish are biting. The captain will spend the first part of the trip running to productive waters, often 15-20 miles offshore where the blue water holds the big pelagics. Along the way, we'll stop to catch live bait when conditions allow – nothing beats fresh pogies or blue runners for enticing a monster King Mackerel. Once we reach the fishing grounds, you'll get a solid 2 hours of focused fishing time. The shared format means you'll be fishing alongside other anglers, which actually adds to the excitement when someone hooks up. With a minimum of 10 passengers required, there's always good energy on deck and plenty of helping hands when the action heats up. At $280 for two people, it's one of the best values you'll find for quality offshore fishing in Alabama waters.
Trolling Tactics & Gear
This trip is all about trolling – the most effective method for covering water and finding active fish in the offshore environment. The crew will have multiple lines in the water, typically running a spread of planers, downriggers, and flat lines at different depths to target various species. You'll be using medium to heavy tackle capable of handling 20-40 pound fish, with wire leaders to prevent bite-offs from Wahoo and King Mackerel. The boat will maintain speeds between 6-10 knots, depending on conditions and what species we're targeting. Live bait fishing comes into play when we mark schools or find structure – nothing beats the excitement of watching a live blue runner disappear in a massive splash as a Cobia or King Mackerel crushes it. The deckhand will handle rigging and netting, but you'll want to bring gloves and be ready to take direction when a fish is on. Remember, that $30 tip per person for the deckhand is well worth it – these guys work hard to put fish in the boat.
Top Catches This Season
King Mackerel are the bread and butter of this trip, and Orange Beach waters produce some absolute smokers. These silver bullets typically range from 15-40 pounds, with the occasional trophy pushing 50-plus. Kings are ambush predators that relate to structure, bait schools, and temperature breaks. They hit hard and fast, often jumping multiple times before you get them to the boat. The best action usually happens in 60-100 feet of water where they cruise the edges looking for easy meals. What makes Kings so exciting is their unpredictability – you might catch three in an hour, then go two hours without a bite.
Mahi Mahi, or Common Dolphinfish as they're scientifically known, are pure gold when you find them. These colorful fighters love floating debris, weed lines, and temperature breaks. Mahi typically travel in schools, so when you hook one, there's often more around. They're incredible fighters that jump, dive, and change colors throughout the fight. Most Mahi in our waters run 10-25 pounds, but bull males can push 40-plus. The key with Mahi is keeping some in the water after you hook the first one – they'll often stay with their hooked buddy, allowing for multiple hookups.
Cobia are the wildcards that can make your entire trip. These brown sharks of the surface are curious, aggressive, and absolutely delicious. Orange Beach is famous for Cobia fishing, especially during their spring and fall migrations. These fish can exceed 50 pounds and will test your tackle and stamina. They're often found around rays, sharks, and structure. When you see that brown torpedo swimming near the boat, your heart rate doubles.
Lane Snapper might seem like small potatoes compared to the other species, but they're fantastic table fare and often save the day when the big pelagics aren't cooperating. These colorful little fighters are found around bottom structure and are excellent for keeping kids and novice anglers engaged.
Yellowcheek Wrasse round out the species list as beautiful reef fish that add variety to your catch. While smaller than the other targets, they're gorgeous fish that fight well for their size and make excellent photos.
