Most summer wahoo in our area range from 15 to 40 pounds, with the occasional monster pushing 50 or more.

These fish have beak-like mouths and sharp teeth that can cut through sea urchins, so they're not picky eaters. What makes them fun to target is their stubborn fight - they'll use that flat body to turn sideways and make your drag work. The meat is excellent, white and flaky when cooked right. One trick I always share: when you feel that first nibble, don't set the hook right away. Grey triggers are notorious bait stealers who'll pick at your squid or cut bait. Let them take it and run a bit before setting - patience pays off with these guys.
Coryphaena HippurusMahi are the jewels of the summer Gulf - those electric blues and golds are something to see. Most of ours run 15-30 pounds, though we've had some push 40. They're surface fish that love floating debris, weed lines, and current breaks in open water. Summer is prime time here in Destin, especially when the water hits 75+ degrees. What makes them special is the whole package - they jump like crazy when hooked, change colors right in the boat, and the meat is absolutely top-shelf eating. Firm, white, and mild. Here's a tip that works: when you hook one, leave it in the water and get more lines out fast. Mahi are schooling fish, and that hooked one will call in his buddies. Scomberomorus MaculatusSpanish Mackerel are perfect summer targets - scrappy 1-3 pound fish with bright silver sides and yellow spots.
