Ready to spend a solid day on the water chasing some of the best reef fish around? This 6-hour offshore adventure gives you plenty of time to work the reefs and put some serious fish in the cooler. We're talking about targeting red and black grouper, mahi mahi, and even blue marlin if we get lucky. With room for up to 4 anglers, you'll have space to fish without stepping on each other's lines, plus personalized attention from our crew who know these waters like the back of their hand.
What to Expect on the Water
This trip is all about giving you the full offshore reef experience without rushing. Six hours means we can hit multiple spots, adjust our game plan based on what's biting, and give everyone a real shot at their target species. The boat comes loaded with quality tackle and all the safety gear you need, so you can focus on what matters – getting fish to the boat. Whether you're new to offshore fishing or you've been doing this for years, our crew will dial you in on the best techniques for each spot we hit. The extra time also means you can actually enjoy being out there, soaking up the sun between bites and watching for dolphins or birds working bait schools.
Reef Fishing Techniques
Reef fishing is a whole different game than inshore or deep-drop fishing. We'll be working structure in 80 to 200 feet of water, using everything from live bait to heavy jigs depending on what the fish want that day. The crew will set you up with the right weight and hook size for grouper, then switch you over to lighter tackle when the mahi show up. We use circle hooks for the bottom fish to help with safe releases, and we're always watching the fish finder to see what's holding on the structure below. When we find a good piece of bottom, we'll anchor up and work it thoroughly before moving on. The key is staying patient and keeping your bait in the strike zone – these reef fish can be picky, but when they turn on, the action gets fast.
Target Species
Red grouper are the bread and butter of our reef trips, and for good reason. These chunky bottom dwellers love hanging around the edges of hard bottom and coral heads, usually in 60 to 120 feet of water. They're most active during the cooler months, but you can catch them year-round if you know where to look. What makes red grouper so popular is their fight – they'll use every piece of structure down there to try and break you off, plus they're fantastic eating. Most of our reds run 5 to 15 pounds, with the occasional 20-pounder that'll really test your drag.
Black grouper are the heavy hitters of the grouper family, and landing one is a real accomplishment. These fish prefer deeper reefs, usually 100 feet and beyond, and they can grow massive – we're talking 50 pounds or more for the big ones. They're more common in warmer months and are incredibly strong fighters that will head straight for the rocks the second they feel the hook. Black grouper are also excellent table fare, with firm white meat that's perfect for grilling or frying.
Mahi mahi bring a completely different energy to the trip. These colorful speedsters love floating debris and weed lines near the reefs, and they put on an absolute show when hooked. They'll jump, run, and change colors right before your eyes. Most mahi we catch run 10 to 25 pounds, and they're some of the best eating fish in the ocean. The peak season runs from late spring through early fall, but we see them scattered throughout the year when conditions are right.
Blue marlin are the holy grail of offshore fishing, and while they're not guaranteed, the reef edges we fish are prime marlin habitat. These magnificent fish can show up any time of year, but summer and fall give you the best shot. Even a small blue marlin will give you the fight of a lifetime – they're incredibly strong, athletic, and absolutely beautiful. Most of the blues we hook are in the 100 to 300-pound range, and we practice catch and release to keep the fishery healthy for future generations.
