They even helped us locate a restaurant that would cook our fresh catch! Which was a challenge in itself, since most places are closed on Monday/Tuesday. Horse-Eye Jack are one of the most underrated fighters you'll encounter in these waters. These silvery bruisers typically run 2-4 pounds but punch way above their weight class when hooked. They school up around structure and drop-offs, often mixed in with other jack species. What makes them special is their incredible speed and stamina – they'll make multiple runs and keep pulling drag long after you think they're done. The best action usually happens during moving water, especially early morning or late afternoon when they're actively feeding on smaller baitfish.
King Mackerel are the speed demons of the Caribbean, and Fajardo's position along major current lines makes it prime kingfish territory. These toothy predators can range from schoolie-sized fish around 10 pounds all the way up to smoker kings pushing 30-40 pounds. They're typically caught trolling, and when one hits, you'll know it immediately – the initial run is absolutely blistering. Kings are most active during the cooler months from November through April, though you can find them year-round if you know where to look. The key is finding the right water temperature and bait concentrations.
Atlantic Bonito might be smaller than their tuna cousins, but they're pure muscle and attitude wrapped in a torpedo-shaped package. These 3-8 pound fish are built for speed and will test your drag system with powerful, sustained runs. They often travel in schools, so when you find one, there's usually more around. Bonito are incredibly fun on lighter tackle, and they're actually excellent table fare when prepared fresh – much better than many anglers realize. Look for them around areas with current and baitfish activity, especially during the morning and evening feeding periods.
Sarda SardaThese torpedo-shaped speedsters can hit 40 mph and are built like small tuna with distinctive black stripes along their backs. Most run 8-12 pounds and about 24 inches, though the record's over 18 pounds. They're pelagic fish, staying in mid-water rather than hugging bottom. When they're feeding, you'll see their dorsal fins cutting the surface like small sharks, and the bird activity above gives them away every time. They school up in huge numbers and go crazy when feeding, taking almost any lure you throw. Fast trolling works great, but when you find a feeding school, cast metal jigs or soft plastics right into the action. They prefer water in the 60s but can handle the 50s. Not great eating, but the fight is pure fun.
Caranx HipposCrevalle jacks are the bulldogs of the reef - pure muscle in a 12-24 inch, 3-5 pound package, though the big ones can hit 60 pounds. They love seagrass flats, sandy bays, and shallow reefs, but the larger fish prefer deeper water around structures. These fish are fearless and will actually approach divers out of curiosity. When feeding, they push baitfish to the surface and create a feeding frenzy that draws birds from miles away. They fight like nothing else their size - just bulldog determination. Best fishing is sight casting to surface schools with topwater plugs or silver spoons. Look for diving birds, then cast beyond the school and retrieve fast. Sphyraena BarracudaThese apex predators are pure muscle and attitude, running 3-6 feet long around our reefs and nearshore waters. They're fast swimmers and pretty skittish - sometimes they'll bolt when they see divers, but they're curious about bubbles. Best fishing is with live bait like pinfish or small mullet on jigs. When you hook one, reel fast - these guys strike quick and feel like light taps rather than heavy pulls. They're great bait for bigger fish like marlin and tarpon, but note they're considered vulnerable, so we practice conservation.
Scomberomorus CavallaKings are some of the fastest fish we target, hitting speeds that'll rival wahoo. They typically run 20-30 pounds around here, though we see plenty bigger. You'll find them in 40-150 feet, often around structures or temperature breaks. Their olive backs and silvery sides make them beautiful fish, and those razor teeth mean business. They feed heavily on blue runners, mackerel, and squid. Best action happens when water temps hit 68-84°F. What makes them special is that blistering speed and the way they'll peel line off your reel.
