There's nothing quite like hitting Lake Michigan during prime salmon season with Feed-N-Time Charters. Our Quick Cast weekend trips run through July and August when the big King salmon are stacked up and hungry. Whether you've been chasing fish for decades or this is your first time dropping a line, these trips deliver the kind of action that keeps you coming back. We keep groups small at six anglers max, so everyone gets plenty of rod time and personalized attention from our crew. All your tackle and gear comes with the trip - you just need to show up ready to fish.
What to Expect on the Water
We'll get you out to the productive zones where salmon and trout are feeding most actively during these peak summer months. Lake Michigan's thermal layers create perfect conditions this time of year, and our captain knows exactly where to find the fish. The boat's equipped with quality downriggers, planer boards, and all the electronics you need to stay on top of schools. Most trips start early to take advantage of the morning bite, but we've got plenty of backup spots if the fish are being finicky. The pace stays fast - when one rod goes off, there's usually more action right behind it. Perfect setup for families or groups of friends who want to get into fish without a lot of downtime.
Trolling Techniques & Gear
We run a trolling spread that's dialed in for Lake Michigan conditions. Downriggers get your spoons and plugs down to where the salmon are holding in the cooler water, usually anywhere from 40 to 120 feet depending on the thermocline. Planer boards spread the lines out wide so we can cover more water and avoid spooking fish with the boat. Popular lures include flasher-fly combos, Spindoctors with peanuts, and classic spoons like Michigan Stingers and Moonshine. We'll adjust colors and depths based on what the fish are showing us that day. When a fish hits, you'll know it - salmon don't mess around when they take a lure. The crew handles all the net work and helps walk you through the fight so you can focus on enjoying the battle.
Top Catches This Season
Chinook salmon are the main attraction during these summer runs, and for good reason. These fish average 15-25 pounds but can push well over 30 when you connect with a real bruiser. Kings fight hard with long runs and head shakes that'll test your drag system. They're feeding heavily on alewives during July and August, which puts them in a aggressive mood and makes them easier to target. The best fishing usually happens when water temperatures hit that sweet spot between 58-62 degrees.
Rainbow trout, or "steelhead" as many locals call them, are another crowd favorite on these trips. They typically run 8-15 pounds but what they lack in size they make up for in acrobatics. Rainbows love to jump and make spectacular runs along the surface. They're often found in the same areas as salmon but sometimes prefer slightly shallower water, especially early in the morning or later in the evening. Their silver sides and pink stripe make them one of the prettiest fish you'll pull from the lake.
Lake trout round out the slam and provide consistent action when salmon fishing slows down. These native fish can live for decades and grow to impressive sizes - 20-pounders aren't uncommon. Lakers prefer the deeper, colder water and will often hit when you're targeting salmon in 80-120 feet. They fight differently than salmon, more of a steady, bulldogging battle that tests your endurance. Lake trout have excellent table fare with firm, flaky meat that's perfect for the grill.
