What to Expect on the Water
Your morning kicks off early as we head out into the shallow bays and flats that make this stretch of Texas coast famous among anglers. These protected waters offer perfect conditions for sight fishing and working structure, with depths ranging from just a few feet to around eight feet. The trip accommodates up to two anglers, giving you plenty of room to cast and fight fish without crowding. Our experienced captains read the tides, wind, and seasonal patterns to position you over the most productive spots. You'll work grass beds, oyster reefs, and drop-offs where baitfish congregate and predators follow. The relaxed pace lets you soak in the coastal scenery while staying focused on finding that next bent rod. Don't worry about bringing anything – we've got rods, reels, tackle, and all the local knowledge you need for a successful day.
Techniques & Tackle Setup
We primarily fish with medium-action spinning gear spooled with braided line, perfect for the shallow water structure fishing that defines inshore angling here. You'll be throwing everything from topwater plugs at first light to soft plastics worked along the bottom. Our tackle boxes are stocked with proven producers like spoons, jigs, and live bait when conditions call for it. The key to success in these bay systems is reading the water and adjusting your presentation. We'll show you how to work a soft plastic along an oyster bar, how to make that topwater plug "walk the dog" over a grass flat, and when to slow down your retrieve to trigger strikes from finicky fish. The shallow water means you can often see the fish before you cast, adding an exciting sight-fishing element that gets your heart pumping when a big red tails in two feet of water.
Customer Stories
"Writing on behalf of my husband as I booked it: My brother, dad, and I were gifted an incredible inshore fishing adventure, a surprise from our amazing wives and mom, and it was hands down one of the best presents ever! We booked with Randy Filla, and from the get-go, we knew we were in for a fantastic time. The morning started off a little slow, which is just part of fishing. But even with the slow start, Randy was an absolute blast. His personality was infectious, filled with hilarious stories and a wealth of fishing knowledge. He kept us entertained and engaged, making the initial lull feel like a fun part of the overall experience. Then, the fishing gods smiled upon us! About two hours in, Randy put us right on top of schools of redfish and black drum. It was like a light switch flipped, and the action was non-stop! We were pulling in fish two and three at a time, with bent rods and screaming reels. The excitement was palpable, and the smiles on our faces were huge. Adding to the thrill, a pod of dolphins showed up, playfully stalking the fish we were releasing. It was an amazing spectacle, witnessing these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat while we were reeling in our catches. We ended the day with our limit of both redfish and black drum, a testament to Randy's expertise and the sheer abundance of fish in the area. But more than the impressive catch, it was the incredible bonding experience with my brother and dad that made this trip truly unforgettable. We shared laughs, fished together, and created memories that will last a lifetime. Randy Filla provided an exceptional experience from start to finish. From his entertaining and knowledgeable guidance to the incredible fishing action, this trip was a complete success. If you're looking for an unforgettable inshore fishing adventure, especially for a family outing—and if your wives and mom are looking for a perfect gift—look no further. We can't wait to book another trip with Randy! Highly recommend!" - Benjamin
Species You'll Want to Hook
Redfish are the crown jewel of Texas inshore fishing, and these copper-colored bruisers put up fights that'll test your drag system. Running anywhere from 18 to 30-plus inches, slot-sized reds are perfectly built for shallow water battles. They school up heavily from late summer through fall, but you can find them year-round in these bay systems. What makes reds so special is their willingness to eat topwater baits and their habit of tailing in skinny water where you can sight cast to them. When a big red inhales your bait in two feet of water, that initial run will remind you why these fish have such a devoted following among coastal anglers.
Black drum might not win beauty contests, but they're absolute powerhouses that will surprise you with their pulling strength. These bottom-dwelling fighters typically range from 14 to 40 inches in our local waters, with the bigger fish showing up more consistently during cooler months. They're suckers for cut bait and soft plastics worked slowly along the bottom near structure. Black drum have a unique ability to use their pharyngeal teeth to crush shellfish, and you'll often hear them "drumming" underwater by contracting muscles against their swim bladders. Land a hefty black drum and you'll understand why they're a customer favorite – pure muscle wrapped in scales.
Speckled trout, or "specks" as locals call them, are the most abundant gamefish in these bay systems and arguably the most fun to catch
