Private Nearshore Trolling on our 37ft Topaz
Looking for some serious fishing action without burning half your day getting to the grounds? Our 4-hour nearshore trolling trip puts you right where the fish are feeding. We're talking King Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Bonito, and those beautiful Mahi Mahi that'll test your drag system. This isn't some crowded party boat situation – it's your private charter for up to 6 anglers on our spacious 37-foot Topaz. Our captain knows these waters like the back of his hand and will put you on fish that'll keep your reels screaming. Whether you're a weekend warrior or just picked up your first rod, we'll make sure you go home with some great stories and hopefully a cooler full of dinner.
What to Expect on the Water
We'll meet you at the dock bright and early, get you set up with all the gear you need, and head out to where the action is. The beauty of nearshore trolling is we're not burning two hours each way to get to the fishing grounds – we're talking a quick 15-20 minute ride to where the pelagic species are cruising. Our 37-foot Topaz gives everyone plenty of room to fight fish without getting tangled up in each other's lines. The boat's rigged with top-shelf electronics, so we're not guessing where the fish are – we're marking bait schools and temperature breaks where these species love to hang out. Expect to cover some water as we work different depths and structure, following the birds and looking for signs of life. When we hook up, you'll know it immediately – these fish don't mess around when they hit your bait.
Trolling Techniques & Setup
Nearshore trolling is all about covering water efficiently while presenting baits at the right speed and depth. We'll have multiple lines out at different levels using a combination of planers, downriggers, and surface baits to target fish throughout the water column. Our tackle setup includes medium to heavy spinning and conventional reels spooled with 20-30 pound test, perfect for handling these hard-fighting pelagic species. We'll be pulling a spread of lures – spoons, diving plugs, and rigged ballyhoo – at speeds between 6-8 knots depending on what we're targeting. The key to success is reading the water temperature, watching for bird activity, and adjusting our spread based on what's working. When we mark bait on the fish finder, we'll slow down and work that area more thoroughly. Don't worry if you've never trolled before – our captain will handle the technical stuff while you focus on the fun part: fighting fish.
Top Catches This Season
King Mackerel are the heavyweight champions of our nearshore waters, and for good reason. These torpedo-shaped predators can stretch over three feet long and pack serious muscle. They're most active during the warmer months when baitfish are plentiful, and they'll absolutely demolish a well-presented spoon or rigged bait. What makes Kings so exciting is their initial run – they'll peel line off your reel like it's on fire, then jump and thrash on the surface. Spanish Mackerel might be smaller than their King cousins, but they make up for it with sheer numbers and acrobatic fights. These guys are perfect for lighter tackle and are usually the first to show up when the water starts warming. They're also some of the best eating fish in the ocean when prepared fresh.
Mahi Mahi, or Common Dolphinfish as they're technically called, are the showstoppers of any nearshore trip. These brilliant green and yellow beauties love to travel in schools around floating debris, weed lines, and temperature breaks. What's really cool about Mahi is they're curious – when you hook one, the rest of the school often sticks around, giving everyone a chance at the action. They're also incredible table fare with firm, white meat that's perfect for grilling. Bluefish round out our target species and bring their own brand of excitement. These voracious predators hunt in packs and when you find them feeding, it's game on. They're scrappy fighters that'll bend your rod double, and their aggressive nature means fast action when they're around.
