Inshore Fishing Charters | Cortez | Anna Maria Island
When you're looking for some of the best inshore fishing on Florida's Gulf Coast, you've found the right spot. Our Gulfcart Fishing Charters operate out of Cortez, putting you right in the heart of Anna Maria Island's prime fishing waters. These aren't your deep-sea marathon trips – we're talking about getting into the sweet spots where the big three (snook, redfish, and trout) love to hang out. The shallow bays, winding mangrove creeks, and expansive grass flats around here have been producing fish for decades, and we know exactly where to find them.
What to Expect on the Water
Your day starts in the protected waters around Cortez, where you'll quickly understand why this area is a customer favorite among serious anglers. We fish the calm bays, mangrove shorelines, grass flats, and tidal creeks that make this stretch of coast so productive. The beauty of inshore fishing here is that you're working in 2-6 feet of water most of the time, which means you can actually see the fish you're targeting – and they can see your bait. It's a chess match between you and some seriously smart fish. We keep our groups small at just 4 anglers max, so everyone gets plenty of rod time and personal attention from your captain. The scenery alone is worth the trip, with pristine mangrove islands and crystal-clear flats stretching as far as you can see. Pack your own food and drinks to keep your energy up, and don't forget polarized sunglasses – trust me, you'll want to see these fish coming.
Techniques & Tackle
We provide all the fishing gear, bait, and licenses, so you can focus on what matters – putting fish in the boat. Inshore fishing here is all about reading the water and presenting your bait naturally. We'll be using medium-action spinning rods paired with reels that can handle the runs these fish are famous for. Live bait is king in these waters – we're talking live shrimp, pinfish, and pilchards that we'll rig up depending on what we're targeting and where we're fishing. Artificial lures have their place too, especially when the fish are aggressive. Soft plastics on jig heads work great around structure, while topwater plugs can create some heart-stopping strikes when conditions are right. Your captain will teach you how to work the mangrove edges, drift the grass flats effectively, and time your casts to moving fish. The key is staying quiet and making accurate presentations – these fish have seen plenty of baits over the years.

Species You'll Want to Hook
Snook are the crown jewel of inshore fishing around Anna Maria Island, and for good reason. These ambush predators love to lurk under mangrove overhangs and around dock pilings, waiting for an easy meal to swim by. They're most active during the warmer months from April through October, with the best action happening around dawn and dusk. What makes snook so special is their explosive strike and their ability to jump clear out of the water when hooked. A typical snook here runs 18-28 inches, but we see plenty of slot-busters that'll test your drag system. They're line-shy and structure-oriented, which means you need to get your bait right in their face without spooking them.
Redfish, or "reds" as we call them locally, are the workhorses of these flats. These copper-colored fighters are active year-round, though they really turn on during the fall months when they school up for their spawning runs. You'll find them tailing in shallow water, rooting around oyster bars, and cruising the grass flats in small pods. Reds average 20-27 inches in our waters, with some real bulls pushing 30+ inches. What anglers love about redfish is their willingness to eat and their bulldogging fight – they don't jump much, but they'll make long, powerful runs that'll have your arms burning.
Sea trout round out our "big three" and they're often the most cooperative species for newer anglers. These spotted beauties are found throughout our grass flats and around structure, feeding heavily on shrimp and small baitfish. Spring through fall offers the most consistent trout action, with fish ranging from 14-20 inches being common. Trout have a soft mouth, so you need to keep steady pressure without horsing them. They're excellent table fare and provide steady action when the snook and reds are being finicky. Many of our guests end up with a mixed bag that includes all three species, making for one heck of a photo at the end of the day.
